Euro Buchla Interface Module

Euro Buchla Interface Module

2012-04-20 by synovatron

Hi all,

Some time ago there was a poll on here about a Euro to Buchla interface which didn't get taken up by Doepfer and I chatted to a few of you including Bakis at the time about the possibility of me doing something. Time passed (as it tends to all too quickly) and now I have a reasonable amount of interest from people over on Muff's forum and have now built custom modules for two clients.

I have decided to manufacture a small quantity of 4HP modules which offer various combinations of CV and gate/trigger I/O (mainly because it takes a lot of time to do custom jobs). I was going to design one module that had all the functions in one wider module but these modules I think are a better idea as it will allow you to mix and match according to your needs and keep real estate low.

I'd be really interested in your thoughts. The post on Muffs is www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53024 where you can see the two custom builds and the proposed new products. Hopefully we will see more synergy between Buchla and Doepfer in the near future. I am not taking orders, just gauging interest and getting feedback. Please contact me off-list if you need pricing etc. I will post more info on my blog as things progress.

Thanks and have a great weekend.

hi Tony,

they seem very nice! well done.

i would be interested in the GT1 and the CV1 modules!

but what about a module that converts the euro 1volt/oct to the Buchla 1.2 volts/oct and vice versa? this is what really interests me the most.

and what would be the cost of each of these 4HP modules?

these are euro format modules , right?

thanks, :-)
Bakis.

Hi Bakis,

I forgot to say but they will have a jumper to select
either 1V/V or 1.2V/V scaling (or 1V/1.2V for the reverse direction)
which will cover all 200e requirements. I would also offer to provide
specials, same curcuit, different resistor values, for any other scaling
required. I think in retrospect that the front panel markings are a little misleading and should be ±CV in or out rather than ±5V in or out as it infers a scaling of 1.

Pricing is an issue and will be down to how many I
produce as I will incur the setup costs for PCB and front panel
manufacture which I have to spread across the whole batch is obviously
the bigger the batch the lower the price to the market. I think I will do the first batch as an introductory offer which will be direct from me. If numbers increase and distributers get involved then I will rethink pricing as they will want to markup by 35%.

My estimates are as follows:- GT1 £70, CV1-3 £65 each. The allternative is that maybe I forget about GT1 and CV1 and produce a combined 8HP module CVGT1 for £100 which is a much better deal especially if your selection is typical. The CV2-3 modules could be then seen as expansion modules with an extra channel and no ground which will be about £70-£75 each.

Yes they are Euro modules although they have a Buchla style graphic. One interested person suggested that this would be good in a module module format too.

I value your opinion so please feel free to comment and suggest. Thanks for you time.

hi Tony,

i think the CVGT1 8hp module is the best solution.

graphics look great and the doepfer/euro format of the module is also the best choice, as euro real estate is much cheaper than buchla real estate.

to the other group members: i am having this discussion here, because i believe it will be of interest to many other doepfer/euro users that want to interface with their (current or future) buchla systems.

i do not believe in modular elitism. all modulars for all the people! :D

thanks,
Bakis.
