I would like to start making my own patch cables and I was wondering if anyone could recommend which type of cable to use and which brand is best

get some 2 pol cable dedicated for audio transmission.

the question brand of the plugs is more important, and then do 
soldering work, else you may have trouble with not working kabels. 
maybe use some schrumpfschlauch if you are sure soldering is well 
done.

are there any info on the two service potis on the LPF A-103 VCF6 
which lays on the board?

what do they calibrate. just want to know if its do something to the 
freq or peak frequence eg.
resonance.

They are used to adjust the scale (P7, 1k) and offset (P6, 100k) of the
filter frequency.
