New Epson Matte Papers

New Epson Matte Papers

2009-12-03 by ClaytonJ

I just read the Mark Dubovoy review of new Epson matte papers on Luminous Landscape

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/printers/epson-papers-09.shtml

It's a very cursory review with little real information, mostly just his personal impressions. He especially liked the hot press bright version, but never mentioned Dmax. The only mention of blacks is "The blacks are also weak, but charmingly so" which doesn't tell us much.

Has anyone here tried these papers yet, or know of another review somewhere?

Regards,
Clayton

"The blacks are also weak, but charmingly so" <---- I've never encountered the "charming" aspect of low dmax. Maybe it exists for some images, but that statement just made me laugh (in the good way). I can't imagine it makes much of a selling point but then again maybe it does, for someone.

I tried the new papers from a sample kit handed out at Photo Expo in NYC.
They are great! The colors are rich and true as any photographs I've seen.
Detail is excellent. I haven't done any actual testing, but my impressions
are very positive. It seems that paper technology is finally catching up
with what we've been wanting for years!

And nowhere in that review is a reference to rag, cotton or
alpha-cellulose. One UK shop says rag but no Epson doc says rag.
Sheets so far but Epson mentions production of rolls later on which
brings the "mould made" in question. We do no longer expect that they
are produced by hand with 4 true deckles but on the cilinder good
look-a-likes can be produced. However 330 grams can be made on a
foudrinier these days. Hahnem\ufffdhle does that. Epson calls the papers
Signature Worthy. Some information on what it really is would be nice
before signatures are placed. BTW, Zercall Germany still makes "mould
made" on the cilinder.

This is the confusion I am having. I, too, found the Hot and Cold Press Epson papers at PhotoPlus and loved them. How is it possible, though, that B&H Photo carries it but Epson has NO mention of it anywhere on their website? (It's beautiful, by the way...)
