Hello all; In case someone wants to check it out, the 3800 driver is now available on the Epson website. After a quick look, I can report that it does allow BO, and the paper configuration setup allows both platen gap adjustment and paper feed-rate adjustment just like the big printers. If this actually is a real BO ability, coupled with the new improved dither, this may turn out to be the best BO machine yet. Really good news. OK, let's not get too excited here: The choices are: color, ABW, and Black. That sounds like BO, but until someone actually gets one and tests it, we won't know. Hold yer horses for another week or two. Steve Karafyllakis --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "sagaface" <sagaface@...> wrote: > > OHMIGOSH, I hope you're right!! If someone has Roys decoder ring for the Epson print codes, I suppose you could do a print to file and see what ink its using. I dont have it, or I would give it a look. Best regards, John Moody

Hi Sarah, >>OK, let's not get too excited here: The choices are: color, ABW, >>and Black. That sounds like BO, but... until someone actually >gets one... >Awwwwwww, Steve. >Anyone planning on testing one soon? Steve should have one in a couple of weeks. Keep your fingers crossed. Because it says "Black" instead of "Black Only" it may be just a quick and dirty way to print a supposedly BW print from a color image. A while back someone reported on a "Black" option (I can't remember which printer) and it used color inks to create the tones. BTW, Steve said that the 3800 will take custom paper sizes down to 4x5 ish, like the 13" printers. So that's one good thing. Hmmm....doesn't sound too promising, but I guess we'll see. Jeez, the waiting is hard! --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Clayton Jones" <cj@...> wrote:

I don't know what you guys are talking about, but I have seen the results of the 3800 and they are totally neutral and totally smooth. You won't buy a better printer for that amount of money. Epson did it right this time. john

Hey John...we were just speculating about whether BO would be an available option on the 3800, not really questioning the capability of the machine in general, which I am sure is wonderful. I'm a die-hard BO fan, but would love to be able to choose between that, ABW and a RIP. cheers, Sarah --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "john dean" <deanwork2003@...> wrote:

By BO I assume you mean output through the black and two grey channels only. Sorry, I didn't ask about that. I assume they are using some of the light c and m inks through their ABW driver, but if they are you certainly can't tell it, no metamerism or color content that I could see under daylight or tungsten and very neutral. The great thing about this machine besides auto switching betwen PK and MK (yes) is its small size for 17" wide output. They beat everyone in that regard. John

Yeah, black as in the 2100 UK driver...

The decoder ring indicates that it really is BlackOnly. I don't have a printer so I haven't any idea what the dither looks like. Roy --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "John Moody" <moodymz3@...> wrote:

This option is available on the 7800 so I would assume its the same. I've tried it on glossy paper on the 7800 and you get a very warm print with loads of bronzing. So it looks like its BO because the tone looks the same as when I tried BO with my 4000 on glossy media as well. I haven't tried it with matte papers but assume it would work. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "sagaface" <sagaface@...> wrote:

BO looks good on my 4800, EXCEPT for the terrible brozning. I just tested it with Epson Premium Luster. Scott
