Silver Rag paper setting

Silver Rag paper setting

2006-04-21 by Steven Daniel

Hi,

I just received my first roll of Crane's new Silver Rag paper. After
putting it in the machine (Epson 4800), I discovered the Epson driver
doesn't allow settings for 3rd party papers. Does anyone know what
Epson paper to choose for using Silver Rag? Or is there a better way
to do this?

Thanks,
Steve

Try Premium Semi-gloss that's what I used with really good results for
the media setting. You will also want to go to the Crane website and
download the color profile if you don't have a custom one made.

Thanks John. But I just tried it with the same result; a flat muddy
print. I'm using the Advanced B&W mode, is that what I want?

By the way, I just notice when I use the Preview, I get the same
flat, muddy image.

Okay, I got it to print right after re-reading
the directions and setting the driver to No Color
Adjustment. Now if only the cutter would stop
grinding like it's cutting through metal..

Yea, if you let the printer manage the color outupt you are
disregarding the profile. You might want to save that cutter for when
you really need it. They wear out quite fast with thick papers. It is
a huge drag when dealing with thick roll papers, but, as Tony Soprano
would say, what ya gonna do.

[Digital BW] Re: Silver Rag paper setting

2006-04-22 by john dean

Now that is one hell of a good idea and it never occured to me. If I
could learn to cut it perfectly straight so the roll does't have to be
removed from the machine each time a print is completed it would work.
If I stroke a straight line in PShop I should be able to follow it.

Now that is one hell of a good idea and it never occured to me. If I
could learn to cut it perfectly straight so the roll does't have to be
removed from the machine each time a print is completed it would work.
If I stroke a straight line in PShop I should be able to follow it.

I have one of these:
http://allbrands.com/products/abp07520-0128.html which works OK with
the shoe blades installed (actually mine is a yellow and black Dritz
model). I'm wondering if one of the rotary versions here:
http://allbrands.com/products/abc0128.html that look like they could
take your finger off would work better. The Eastman looks nice, but I
would probably cheap out and get the Gemsey RXM1-1.

The angle on the one I have makes it more difficult to use, which is
why I think the Eastman rotary finger remover might be a better
choice. Not sure if the octagonal or circular blade would be better
for heavy art paper, you might need to buy both to find out.

[Digital BW] Re: Silver Rag paper setting

2006-04-22 by john dean

Jim,

Yes, that isn't a problem. I have a good Rototrim cutter. What I was
refering to is the printer needs to have the roll cut straight or it
won't cue up for the next print which would require removing the roll
each time. Just doing one is no problem but I'm about to embark on two
jobs that will keep them coming one after another and I would rather
cut each print as it comes out than end up a long roll to cut apart
later. And even that wouldn't be a problem with Cone's inks but with
Ultrachrome and rag, you'd better check for clogged nozzles every now
and then or your in trouble.

But, I think this idea of the electric scissors could work once I gain
practice with cutting the straight line. It is a very good idea.

It would be nice if the paper cutters on the new machines were as good
as the 10K. That one took me 4 years to dull it and I cut everything
with it - canvas, etching board, linen, you name it. Epson wants us to
buy their flimsy over priced media.

Also, Singer makes some that were recommended on the large format list
some time ago, I think they're one of those "seen on tv" shop things...

Interesting, Thanks Tyler.

Here is the Singer.
http://www.dutchguard.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ss&c1=singer&source=overture&kw=electric_scissors_singer&ovchn=OVR&ovcpn=singer&ovcrn=electric+scissors+singer&ovtac=PPC

For $17.00 you can get two of them. I think I'll go for that. At that
price you could toss em after 6 months if you had to.

The Eastman is really nice and some of the others Greg listed looked
very smooth but probably way sharper than I'd need for Museum Etching
or canvas. I belive they are designed for really tough fabrics. I'm
afraid I'd end up with blood all over the place.

Yes that's them. I sent someone out to pick some up for me when I
heard about them, they came back and said they can't be right, they're
too ugly!
Still need them though...

Electric scissors (or rotary finger removers)

2006-04-23 by Greg

My Dritz gets tired after cutting several times on German Etching, so
the rotary finger remover might still be the best choice. The big
problem with the style like my dritz is that you really need to oil
the blades to keep them sharp and cutting smoothly. You will of course
immediately see the problem with this. It does do a great job on
canvas though, so maybe it's just the wood fiber in the GE that
stresses it. And if you take a look at the Eastman cordless rotary
finger remover, they show the different blades. The four "sided" would
probably be perfect, the eight sided looks down right deadly!

If you really wanted to, you could probably fabricate a cutting guide
to attach to the printer, then you would just slide the cutter along
the guide to get a nearly perfect cut. Might require making a new foot
for the cutter, but that shouldn't be all that difficult.

Re: Electric scissors (or rotary finger removers)

2006-04-23 by john dean

The perfect solution is a rotary paper cutter on a table in front of
the machine I did that in my old place. Now I've got three large
format machines, a drum scanner,3 computes, and a scitek all in one
room! I've got to get another place.(and...I need my fingers to play
the guitar).

Re: Electric scissors or electric guitar?

2006-04-23 by john dean

Guitar playing comes in real handy when your stressed out and waiting
for that long print to come out or that big scan to complete. I've
even joined the yahoo jazz guitar group which is excellent. I'm
working on several books they recommended. I have a 1953 Gibson ES175
archtop for when I am in a thoughtful mood, and a Japanese Strat when
I'm all keyed up and want to crank it. Lately I've been in such a mood
as I might plug in my distortion petal and let it all out.

Are we drifting a bit from things guys?
:)

Back to the scissors, Black and Decker rechargeable $39 @Home Depot.
I have been cutting hundreds of prints so far and still sharp. Best
part is they make it with a quick change head to be replaced at some
time with new blades, if it ever gets dull. 3 months so far.

Well that's more in my price range Mark. Are you able to cut a
straight line on the roll without removing it. That is my goal.

Looks like we've got a regular league of crafty gentlemen (I know, an obscure reference).
I think as soon as possible, we should organize getting all of us (no doubt extraordinarily
attractive) photographers in a line all geared out, gaffer's taped, and dressed up, and pound
out Smoke On the Water. I mean heck, John's got a stomp box. Too bad my Electroplex head
is on ebay right now and will be gone by then.

OK, that was my Sunday morning off topic hallucination. Now about that yellow ink...

No problem, as long as you have a steady hand. It did come with two
types of heads, one with no guide plate and one with. I like the one
with.

Oh, yes, a guide, great, I may be able to save my paper cutter for
those really thin Epson papers.

Amazon lists them for $29.99 but not in stock, also the B&D site
suggests Target. I just wish they had made the handle straight. I
think this would have worked better for cutting paper still hanging
from a large format Epson. Variable speed might have been nice too.
Since my Dritz needs new batteries, maybe I'll get one of these B&D
instead.

I wonder how well one of these would work for a cheap roll paper
slitter for those that want to cut large rolls down to desktop size?

Target huh, well you guys are just full of scissor information today.
I'll check em out let you know how it works out Greg.

A friend of mine users hers for cutting wrapping paper, which is very
thin. She got a pair before the holidays and said she buzzed (sorry -
no pun intended) through all her gift wrapping faster then ever.

The guide on it could be positioned against a rule I think. Here is
the link to the web site with photos but it does not show the head
with the guide in any.

I've been reading all the posts about cutting roll paper with an electric scissors and
thought I guide would help for sure.

I'd recommend something like an Aluminum U-Channel from McMaster-Carr:

http://www.mcmaster.com/param/asp/PSearch2.asp?
reqTyp=parametric&act=psearch&FAM=aluminum&FT_138=94094&session=aluminum;
138=94094&sesnextrep=531243577308951&ScreenWidth=1280&McMMainWidth=879

If that link doesn't work try:

http://tinyurl.com/qzj8r

If the link doesn't work do a search for "Metal Rod" and find Aluminum Rods in the list.
The McMaster-Carr website is frames based and is funky.

Once you have scissors in hand take some measurements of the business end and order
the appropriate size.

I know how much John Dean likes McMaster-Carr!

I'm a former guitar player...if that means anything?

RE: [Digital BW] Re: Electric scissors or electric guitar? (and a real question)

2006-04-24 by Ken Carney

I think Electric Scissors would be a pretty nifty band name...well, maybe 40
years too late. But, it could be a retro, real retro, thing - a big screen
in the background flashing inkjet images. Today only an idea, tomorrow the
Crossroads festival. Anyone need an acoustic/slide blues player?

The question: I've been thinking about a 4800, but: I don't do production
printing. 2-3 prints a week on the average would be a big run, sometimes
though more. Right now I use a 2200 with IP6, no clogging problems with UC
inks even when it sits idle for a month as it sometimes does. Does anyone
have any thoughts as to whether the 4800, with what must be more plumbing,
would lead to clogging problems under those circumstances? I'm pretty
pumped about the 4800, with the introduction of these "FB" papers, and the
ability to make a larger print. Any info appreciated!

UT-FS cartridges for my Epson 3000 printer

2006-04-24 by Arthur Fink

Went to order some of these for my Epson 3000 printer, and found that
they are no longer on the MIS web site. Are they available
elsewhere? Is there a substitute product to use? Or ... how hard is
it to load these cartridges?

The large format carts are easy to re-load. The bulk UT-FS inks must still
be available.

Let us not forget the bass player now girls!!

You are right. I was doing a gig some years ago, playing a set that
would alternate with a small big band, them my group (at the time)
then the big band etc.

The venue owners were concerned with the volume so the had a DBmeter
checking the room during sound check. At our absolute loudest (11 on
the volume scale), bass, drums, two keys, two guitars and 7 singers,
we were several DB under the big band's horn section.

It's all perception.
