making mega-prints

2006-03-01 by Matti Koskinen

hi,

just wondering if anybody has made big prints by tiling smaller prints?

My son had an idea: he took one of my pictures, in elements split the
picture to 4 and inverted two of them. I then printed the four
bw-pictures in A4 size, and he mounted the prints in cardboard leaving
one inch gap between the pictures. The result looks quite nice and it's big.

Tiling super-B size prints makes it possible to create even larger
image. How about taping the prints without the gap? Would the seam be
too visible? Any tips?

thanks

I tried it a few months ago with 4 A3+ tiles just to see what my work
looked like bigger before I shelled out for a bigger printer. It's a
devil to get such a precise cut that they fit together perfectly. But
even when cut perfectly you can't hide the joins when taped from behind
or stuck down on a large sheet. If you want it to look unjoined - it
won't. So, my suggestion is that your son's idea is right - if you must
do it then make a feature of the window panes.

Matti,

Not to say that Steve Gledhill is wrong - I know he is right, but I believe that what you
describe is exactly what Stephen Livick is doing. You'll need to have the patience of a
saint! Check it out.

Good luck.

thanks Steve and Josh. Livick's mural size print looks great, but surely
needs time to registrate the 36 prints. I was thinking of buying
Designjet 130 to print bigger than A3+, but I don't know how well it
prints B&W. Anybody having DJ 130 and printing B&W? Metamerism?

thanks

As far as very large prints go, there are several printers that have
96+ inch wide ability. I think 125 inches is the widest you can find
that will print 1440x1440. Look for places that use Rolandm, Mutoh, and
Mimaki printers (among others).

I routinely do highest quality 11 color printing up to 48² on fine art or
canvas for artists repro (Giclee) and myself on ColorSpan 52² printer. J

Matti:
You should be aware, that the HP 130 is a dye printer, and if you want to print on "art"
type papers, your print life will be quite short. And if exposed to direct sunlight, (or bright
fluorescents) without any UV protection, even shorter.

This printer will give wonderful color results, and resulting prints on the special HP papers
give Wilhelm life in the neighborhood of 70 years.

Can't tell you how linear the printer is with the native profiles for neutral B&W without
cross-overs.
