Digital BW, The Print

To try and save money on K3 inks I was considering  buying 4800 carts and
taking the ink out and injecting them into MIS 2400 carts?  If that works
should I siphon all of the ink out of the 110ml carts and place it into the
MIS 4oz bottles or just leave it in the large cart?

I just did a calculation using Atlex prices (the lowest I know of).

Cart...Quan......Price...Cost/ml
---------------------------------
2400....15 ml...$ 11.20...$.75
4800...110 ml...$ 69.00...$.63
4800...220 ml...$112.00...$.51

With the 110ml cart the savings is .12/ml, or about 1.80 per 15ml cart
 (-16%).

With the 220ml cart the savings is .24/ml, or about 3.60 per 15ml cart
(-32%).

The 110 ml carts are $55 and the 220 ml carts are $85 from B&H.

Do you get all 15 ml out of a standard cart?  

Does the R2400 use ink from all the carts when one is replaced? If so,
refilling carts would give you a way of reducing the overall ink wastage.

And the Atlex carts are 49.95, not 69.95. You have to click on 
the 'buy' button to get the final price.

You MIGHT get 12 ml out of that small cart. No more. On the other 
hand, if you really wanted to, (not wise) you could drain the very 
last refilled cart and get all of the 4800 cart through your printer.

So it's more like;  R2400 cart = .93/ml
                     4800 cart = .45/ml
Half the price.

My understanding is that the 2400 carts are about 11 ml; and the 4800 
110 ml carts are actually widely available (from IT supplies for one 
example) at $55.  So these figures shift the balance considerably.

I'm planning on transferring the ink from the 110ml cart to the 4oz ink
bottles that MIS sell.  I figure that they will last longer in a bottle.


Cost breakdown.

cart     capacity      price            price/2400 cart
2400     13ml          11.20 (Atlex)     11.20
4800     110ml         54.95 (B&H)       6.49  (8.46 refills) save 42%
4800     220ml         84.95 (B&H)       5.02 (16.92 refills) save 55%

Then you find a buddy to split the cost and the 220ml carts.

Epson claims 6 months after opening, so I would guess it might
actually be twice that.
