Help Folks, I got an Epson c88 printer for my church and need to know if the original carts can be refilled, and if yes, where do I need to drill a hole to fill? Your friend in Photography, Johnny

I saw a diagram of an Epson cartridge online somewhere - it was the most convoluted bunch of ink and air passages that you could possible imagine. Speculation was that it was designed in part to be virtually impossible to refill. Epson's business model is reportedly based on giving away printers and making a fortune on ink cartridges. If this is so, you would expect them to make a major design effort on their cartridges to prevent refilling. There are third party vendors who sell refillable cartridges and inks (and chip resetters - the cartridges have chips that record ink usage and shut the printer down when the cartridge gets low, so you have to reset the chips to "full" after you refill them in order for the printer to work again) to go with them. If your church uses enough ink to justify the effort of refilling, that would probably be the way to go. Cheers, Kip Johnny Eades wrote:

Johnny: I would have to reinforce what Kip has said, don't bother! When you have an empty cartridge, tear it apart and see what a labrinth they have made. I tried it myself and it works for a couple fills, but you are better off to find a refillable cart such as MIS offers, and refill using their inks. Your costs will be a quarter of what they are now. You would be buying MIS ultrachrome ink for the C88 I believe. They have two different formulations. You also need a chip resetter, a bottom fiill adapter, and some syringes and needles. Where to put the hole, I made mine near the top left of the label. I used a toothpick end for the cork. Leslie Otterbein

Thanks for the responses about refilling the C88 carts. It was as I suspected but hoped was wrong. I do my own refilling on my 1280 with MIS UT2 inks and really do get good results from the ink/printer combination. Again thamks for the responses, I've ordered the carts I can refill for that pinter just before this note. Your friend in Photography, Johnny
