Warmer Tone with EZ C86 Warm vs UT-R2 R220 Warm

Warmer Tone with EZ C86 Warm vs UT-R2 R220 Warm

Paul Roark, et al:

Paul, 1st let me add my thanks and respect for all
thank you so kindly pioneer for the rest of us!

My question concerns the tone with your C86 EZW and
R220 UT-R2W ink-sets: I have printed one of my old
favorite negatives (35mm Panatomic scanned with a
Nikon 9000ED)taken in a mostly dark hallway with light
coming through a small star shaped window at the end -
you probably get the "picture" - there is a lot of
dark gray, some pure black, a bit of middle gray, and
some pure white. I have been pleased with both of the
approaches using HPR, your insets, your recommended
settings, and for the R220, your ICC profile for the
HPR at gamma 2.2. But, there is a pronounced easily
perceptible difference in tone - the C86 EZW being
very much warmer than the R220 UT-R2W both onto HPR
with very similar overall density. I even double
checked to be sure I had the Warm UT-R2 set in and
assuming they came correctly filled and labeled from
MIS - I do.

Is this just the "nature of the beasts" or is
something wrong? Again, I like them both, although I
give a slight nod to the less-warm R220 UT-R2W.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL...

Michael,

Both the C86 EZ Warm and the R2 Warm are supposed to be pure carbon inks.
As such, I would expect about the same warmth on prints. Dot size
differences might make a small difference, but I doubt it would be
significant. If you fill your own and want the warm tone, R2 Warm is just
UT2 or UT7 dark and light gray carbon inks (UT2 M & LM, UT7 C & LC).

Re: [Digital BW] Warmer Tone with EZ C86 Warm vs UT-R2 R220 Warm

2006-01-03 by mjvendrell2

Yes that was what I thought I understood and why I was so surprised
at the results. So much so that I did a reprint using the C86 and as
I said checked the carts and the invoice from MIS for the R220 -
thinking that maybe they had sent the N inksets instead - but unless
the labeling is wrong - that wasn't the anawer. Maybe the labeling
is wrong because this is not all that subtle.

Thanks again.

Has anyone else seen this and or have any additional ideas?
