Dust Problems While Coating Papers

Dust Problems While Coating Papers

2005-07-17 by Terry Ritz

I've been making some good progress in "liquid laminating" my Innova papers.
However, on images with white areas I'm finding it almost impossible to keep
the dust bunnies off (they look like small hairs). It's bad enough to ruin
the print. They don't show up on the darker areas. I first apply Golden GAC
500 with a roller and then spray on Golden's Archival Varnish. I've found
dust to be a problem at any step in the process and in more than one
location of the house.

How do the rest of you deal with this?

Thanks,

Terry.

I very lightly brush my prints with an anti-static wisk and then
spray with Print Shield.

Hello Terry,

I found out the dust accumulates on the roller so what I always do now
is rinse it and squeeze out as much water as you can. The moistened
roller actually works better than a dry one. About dust during the
aerosol spray ... I'm not sure what you can do. It's not so much a
problem for me because my spray booth is equiped with a powerful 495
CFM blower that practically makes the room dust free within 15
seconds. Perhaps you should just get the piece in ready position, blow
across with a compressed air can, wait until the dust settles, then spray.

Thanks Nick.

I've been cleaning the roller and my paint tray first but still I have
problems. I've picked up a fan from an old furnace that I plan to mount in
my basement window. Might be enough to take care of the dust and exhaust the
dangerous fumes all at the same time. Now I just need some time to set it
up!

Terry.

Hi Brad.

Print Shield seems to work fine for me. It's the heavier varnish sprays I
have problems with. They take longer to dry.

Thanks,

Terry.
