QTR 2.30 beta / R1800

QTR 2.30 beta / R1800

2005-07-14 by Nick H. Nugent

Roy and R800/1800 users,

Even with this beta version my R1800 is in full production with QTR.
2800 dpi printing is now very fast and I'm able to create beautiful
cool, black, and sepia profiles for a Brilliant Supreme Luster paper.
For each of these profiles the GLOP curve defined with two points:
0,50 and 100,50 yields bronze free prints with excellent black.

There is though a strange issue which only happens when printing
through QTR. There is subtle banding in the top .6 inch of the paper.
To avoid this banding I just need to tell QTR to print starting at
somewhere beyond .6 in the top margin. I wonder if other R1800 users
experience the same thing.

Thanks for quick work on the R1800.

That sounds like good news. Any chance you can share the LAB values from
the gray ramp?
Would you think the R1800 is a close contender to the R2400 with your
results out of QTR, or just wishful thinking on my part?

Best regards,
John Moody

Hello John,

Here are the density values for the three profiles:

black-only with a 75% GLOP spread even across as an ink:
0.05 0.13 0.20 0.28 0.36 0.45 0.54 0.64 0.74 0.87 0.99 1.11 1.24 1.37
1.49 1.61 1.73 1.90 2.08 2.23 2.38

cool with GLOP applied using a dedicated GLOP printer - I haven't
figured how to apply GLOP in this case (and sepia) because with the
two toners I got ink overload:
0.07 0.14 0.22 0.32 0.41 0.51 0.63 0.73 0.84 0.97 1.10 1.22 1.35 1.51
1.63 1.79 1.92 2.11 2.29 2.38 2.43

sepia with GLOP (same as above):
0.07 0.14 0.22 0.32 0.41 0.51 0.63 0.75 0.85 0.98 1.11 1.24 1.37 1.52
1.65 1.80 1.93 2.11 2.27 2.37 2.42

I'm sure I can get higher dmax using a dedicated GLOP printer for the
black-only case. I got dmax of 2.71 for the 1160 / UT-FS /
Ilford-Smooth-Pearl setup.

Having never seen a b/w output from a 2400 I can't really say whether
the R1800 is a contender in the b/w department, but I'm amazed by its
output. The R1800 with QTR support is definitely the most versatile
machine that I know.

Now only if I can figure out how to apply GLOP to its output to get
the best density in one pass without having to use a dedicated GLOP
printer. This is the same issue with the Epson printer driver. Maybe
this is where the K3 inkset is superior.

A special note to Roy. Is there a way to make QTR dump GLOP for me
even where a pixel value is 255,255,255?
