Digital BW, The Print

how can an adjustment be made to the printer or driver to centre an 
image precisely ?

Printing from Photoshop, the image is positioned in the centre of the 
canvas; yet it prints a little off to one side ?

If there's a more appropriate group to ask this question please let 
me know.

Try this: File>Page Setup>Properties>Paper Tab. Under "Printable Area,"
choose "Centered." Should work.
