Back up printer. C86 or 1280

Back up printer. C86 or 1280

2005-07-02 by neilsphoto

My 2200 is in for repair. So I am kicking around the idea of a back
up printer. I also have an 820. It is nice for small color prints but
BW is pretty poor.

So for back up I was thinking 1280 or C86. I could get MIS UTs for
either. I know the 1280 will print 13x19 but forget that for a moment.

The 1280 can print BO. Can the C86 print BO? 1280s are at B&H and
with a $100 rebate till they are all gone. Comp USA lists the 1280 as
out of stock and won't ever be again.

C86s are cheap and easy to get. Most of my prints are @6x9. If the
C86 did a nice BO job (if it can) I'd go get one today.

Thanks for opinions

Neil

There is a "black ink only" check box in the C86's driver settings menu.

I've no experience there. I'm using the EZ inks for getting my toe wet
in digital B&W printing. That works pretty well, but I'm trying to
figure out why I'm getting occasional black 'flecks' all over the paper
I run through the machine, as though a black nozzle were randomly firing
during printout.

Neil,

Yes, but the quality of the BO on most C86s is bad. Some report good
results, but they are the exception. I think it's a quality control issue.
With all the jets firing the C86s are mostly very good.

My C86 continues to please. Yesterday, I tried Paul's Kirkland +
MIS PK + Driver/Sliders settings formula in the C86 and was really
impressed by the results. And oh so trouble free (now that I make
sure to print at least once a week or so).

Sticking a PK in the C86 will now force me to test the QTR more
with my 2200 on some new-to-me matte papers. Kayenta and Premier
Matte are warming up in the bullpen for testing.

Please report your opinion.

Those are two papers I'm really interested in.

Especially the Premier. I've come close a few times to ordering it.

Thanks,

Scott

Re: [Digital BW] Back up printer. C86 or 1280

2005-07-03 by Scott McLoughlin

Yes, I likely will. I like warmish matte prints and print with EZW
with just one EZN cyan cartridge.

But the glossy prints look much warmer than the matte, so I'll be futzing
at some point in the future to get the same "pretty but not too warm"
look on glossy.

PKN would also be my excuse for finally diving into filling my own carts.
