OT? film grain on digital images

2005-06-01 by Jerry Blanton

Sorry if this is off topic but I am currently caught between B&W film
and digital imaging. The inkjet B&W prints I like best are those that
I shot on B&W film and scanned but I would like to do more with my
digital SLR...but I don't like how "clean" the images are. Perhaps
I'm using the "film grain" filter on Photoshop incorrectly but I've
not been happy with any of the ways of trying to introduce film grain
except for adding some light "noise" to the image. Does anyone have a
technique they really like for making digital B&W feel a little
more "analog"?

Have a look at

This seems to be a good idea, I haven't tried it myself, though.

IMO "black only" does very well, combined with a very little sharpening.

Move to quarantaine
