QTR tonal range

QTR tonal range

2005-05-02 by krn_ptr

I'm using the supplied PFA paper profiles in QTR with a 2200 MK to print on
Velvet Fine Art. The neutrality is good, but the contrast is low. Should I create
my own profiles for this paper/ptr combination? How do I do this on a G5?

TIA,

peter

First, are you using the ICC profile when printing - QTR-Gray Matte Paper

Hi Steve,

Yes I am using the QTR-Gray Matte Paper ICC profile, but I'm not using Lab
Gray as my gray space. I found it didn't make any difference and it darkened
the screen image.

Only the output/printer profile is important. The issue with VFA is a lack
of dMax which eventually people see as a lack of "contrast".

Steve,

I find Velvet Fine Art one of the best matte papers I have profiled
for Dmax, whether for color or B&W. I can typically hit a Dmax of
1.72 (L* of about 15), which is great for a matte paper. Compared to
good glossy or luster media, it comes up weak, of course.

Lou,

Can you please tell me how you go about profiling for PFA? I'm on OSX.

TIA,

peter

Peter,

I am on a Windows machine and don't know the Mac interface at all.
And I have never used PFA. It would probably be best to let an
experienced Mac user help you so I don't lead you astray.

Carl Schoefield wrote a nice mini-tutorial and posted it in the Files
Section of the Yahoo QuadToneRip forum. That would be a great start
and I believe it is aimed at Mac users.

Thanks, Lou. I'll check out Carl's tutorial. Actually, I'm not using PFA paper,
just the profile, because I don't have one for VFA.

Regards,

peter
