Frank, I will say that that's what I've been doing. I just keep track of my settings until I find one I'm happy with and save that as a preset. I didn't find curves for all the papers either and so got the closest I could with the paper choice and then worked with 'blends' after that point. I'm on a PC BTW.

I'm on a Mac but I think it's the same for Windows...

If there is not a neutral curve you can mix warm and cool curves. Choose the two curves
and start with a 50/50 mix. If it's too cool add more of the warm curve and visa-versa...

Re: [Digital BW] Re: QTR selecting 2 tone curves help

Yes, it seems an expensive route for me also. I've been working with the sepia/cool blends. I think it is probably pretty subjective doing it this way. If you search the list you may find some recommendations for settings for particular paper--or maybe someone here will jump in and give their thoughts on this.

Expensive? Print a ring-around of six 2x3 images on one letter size paper all with differnet
curves.

Or just print a step wedge for each - all on the same page

I hate to clutter the list with something like this but I have to say it LOL--DUH!!!
I don't know why I didn't think to do either of the mentioned things. Sometimes one just overlooks the most obvious.

Well I'm being stupid too and I am not contradicting the advice - i'm
quite sure printing step wedges or small segments is a correct way to
view differences, but what i still dont get is.............. you
have about 4 curves on the left and 4 on the right for each paper
plus a hundred positions on the blend. So as per my original post,
where do I start looking for a neutral print on a common standard
like epson enhanced matte or photorag?

Mix warm and cool - I use my own curves but when I did use the UC curves I
found that around 35/65 warm/cool was close. Personally I would print step
wedges of 100-0 warm-cool to 0-100 warm-cool in 10% increments. Sepia is
sepia so you typically would not mix that. Same with Coolse. Others may
disagree but that is a good starting point.

Frank, try blending the EEMsepia and EEM cool 50/50 as a start and then move 10 points either way. Those are a good start. You might start from a 100 and decrease 20 each time to get a feel for what's happening.

Yes, you're right--I said sepia but I meant warm or at least that's what my own preset has--and I found somewhere around what you did--40-60..

-I've found a very nice tone which is very very slightly warm/neutral on Ultrasmooth at
50% w- 50% cool.

I've also found a nice Sepia at 75% Sepia and 25% cool on this same paper . It also looks
nice on EE Matte.

Diane : I have had for years 21"crt but I am not expert not really my
industry. I started coming here to learn about B&W printing. My crt
started dieing. I went out and bought a couple Samsung LCD. I started
with the calibration but have decieded that I need to upgrade that area
in the softwear and hardware not sure which one to buy yet, I dont want
a 1200 dollar area as I said not a pro. that being said, when I started
the research on LCDs I found certain areas need to be look at. Pixel
size, contrast area, refresh area. And most of the montors that I have
look at in the 1500 and less did not equal to the Samsungs that I was
able to get, I got a 21.3" LCD and a 19" the 21.3 allows me to hook to
computers up to it, I run an OS/2warp box and a xp box. Hook the dvi up
to xp and analog to OS2. Hook up the 19" to a win2000 box. Have been
pretty happy with the results so far. Cant wait to get better
calibration software. The advantage to LCD is a 19" is 19" not 17" only
problem is 19" only does 1280x1024 :( as I use to run 1900x1400 on my
old crt. The 21.3" will do 1600x1200 and can be rotated to have it
1200x1900 which can have some added benefit. Anthony

No guidelines available to at least
get you 'in the park'?

Try 75% cool 25% warm. The should get you in the park with EEM.

Exactly,

That is what I did . I printed four 4x5 variations on each 8x5"x11" sheet and
did 5 of those - that's 20 variations. It is great to have these to refer to. With
some of my more sophisticated clients I even give them a set to refer to.
Sometimes these variations are so subtle that the only way to really evalute
them is in comparison. Also I would find a fairly "neutral" silver print to
compare them with. For me I quickly discoverd that there is no such thing as
total neutrality though, with any medium. It's all relative and subjective. That is
a perceptual and relative concept because even the paper base changes the
hue in the higher values and developers, wash technique adds color to
traditional prints. The one thing I did experience was that the really warm
curves from UC and QTR looked much nicer on a natural or slightly warm
paper than on a paper with optical brighteners, like H P Rag. I still want to
figure out a process for split toning.

John,
Not sure how to do split toning wiith QTR but you can do it with
pauls curves by seleting areas and applying different tone curves to
each.
Maybe something similar can be done by preparing different selections
of the image as different files to be printed 'one at a time' -
similar idea to what you do with your 4 printing passes on the same
sheet.

Frank, you mean then combine them as layers in PS? I'm assuming everyone is referring to something similar to duotones? (or not???)

That would require perfect registration and not very practical on an inkjet printer but I
suppose possible.

It's actually easy to do with Paul's curves and selections. You don't run
the paper through the printer twice so registraton isn't a factor in the
process. You make a selection, apply a curve to it, invert the selection,
apply a different curve to the remainder of the image, then print. It's been
quite a while since I've used MIS inks and done this so hopefully I haven't
left out a step or two but I know it was easy to do and I didn't have to run
the paper through the printer twice.
