But I was curious about the statement that a "frame spacer" was used WITHOUT a mat. What is this "frame spacer?"

Hi Donald,

The spacers are peel and stick plastic strips of varying width and thickness.
You cut them to length and stick them to the underside of the glass around
the edges. 1/4" is a nice width to separate the art from the glass. They come
in clear, white, and black and are available from www.frametek.com. These
spacers are narrow enough so that they hide under the lip of the frame. The
idea for me is to present the print with the signed white paper edge (~1-2")
showing and have no mat. I have done this quite successfully with smaller
prints (16x20) that have been permanently mounted to gatorfoam. I have
also done it with RC prints with black frames, black spacers, and a very thin
border of black on the print (no white showing). However, I am interested in
doing this with larger 32x40 prints on 300g Entrada without mounting the
print, just tacking it the gatorfoam at the top and letting the pressure of
spacers on the print edges hold it. My concern is possible paper buckling if
the edges of the print are held tight by the spacer all the way around.
Cheers,

Tom Andrews

The frame spacer is often used without the mat. I brought up mat in
reference to the frame spacer not applying pressure to the print
exactly the way a mat does.

The frame spacer is just a piece of material, in the form of a long
strip that is placed under the lip of the moulding between the glazing
and the print or mat. Is most commonly used in the cases such as this
one where the image is already so large that the addition of a mat
becomes cumbersome. The glazing is harmful to the print and so it is
important that it not be able to come into contact with it. Spacers
may also be used with a mat just to provide more depth and they are
used in shadowbox frames.

They sellthese plastic and rubber strips that fit behind the lip of the
frame, so are not readily visible. They come in different thicknesses.

I see them mainly used in shadow boxes.

To me, they introduce another questionable plastic into the equation.
