Anybody Printing on Somerset Velvet Uncoated???

Anybody Printing on Somerset Velvet Uncoated???

2004-10-25 by Don

Just got a batch of Somerst Velver uncoated paper and wondered if
anyone could share the settings they use for printing.

I am going to guess that I print on the smoother side of the paper and
perhaps use a plain paper setting on my 2200 printer, but other than
that I could sure use some advice.

Go to http://www.digitalartsupplies.com and ask them. I belive they may have profiles
for uncoated Somerset for the Ultra-Chrome inks.

No don't use the plain paper setting! That is low res. Use the watercolor paper setting or
Velvet Fine Art or Photoquality Injket settings......... You could try both sides.

JZ,

How do the blacks look? Deep and rich?

Don,
I don't know about the 2200 but I have used it for some time with both
1200s and a 3000 where it can make very beautiful images. It will
absorb heavy loads of ink so I would guess you need to use an
apropriate paper setting ie:whichever gives maximum ink laydown on the
2200. You will also, for color, need high saturations. For B&W try
black only printing. At the small dot size of 2200 that is likely to
give the best D'max and good blacks. The paper seems to have a
reasonably linear tonal scale but you will probably need to use a
curve in your image prep to separate the very low tones eg:the 85-100%
ink area, for printing. You can print on either side of the
paper.(very helpful when you are testing it as you can use both sides).
I like the paper very much but it is not for every image. If it were a
darkroom paper it would be considered a low contrast grade and require
a juicy neg.

Best,

Duane

Thanks for your in depth answer. I'll try some high contrast images
on it for sure now. Hadn't really thought about doing color on it but
now I think I'll give that a try too.

Thanks for your advice. I was just looking at Inkjetart's recommended
settings and they were for plain paper. I'll give Watercolor and the
old standby, EEM a try.
