QuadtoneRIP, 2100, winXP - can you print full bleed?

QuadtoneRIP, 2100, winXP - can you print full bleed?

2004-09-20 by pmillari

As the subject line states, will QuadtoneRIP let you print edge to
edge with the above combination?

If so, are there any 'methods' for doing so apart from setting the
placement to zero mm for top and left?

What if the image is physically larger than the page?

Just asking as I seem to be having a few teething problems with edge
to edge printing and QTR.

Thanks

The short answer is no, you can't do full bleed borderless prints.

However, I have been looking into the borderless issue. From what I've
seen so far the 2200 Epson drivers on both Mac and PC don't allow true
borderless with sheet paper either. Apparently the 2100 drivers do.
The Epson programmer's manual is pretty vague about it. So if I
do find out how to make true borderless that will likely show up
somewhere down the road.

Hmmm, I've been having no trouble with borderless printing (color)
using the 2200 Epson driver in OS X 10.2.4. The only hoop that Epson
makes you jump through is that after you select the printer option as:
"Stylus Photo 2200 (sheet feeder--borderless)" in the Page Setup
dialogue ("Format For..."), you must reselect that option *again* when
back in the Print dialogue ("Printer..."). You'd think that specifying
once--in Page Setup--would suffice, but IME it doesn't.

No, QTR requires a 1/8 inch border.

Or if you're metric, 4mm. I assume that this is more than the usual
3mm which is possible in other software using the Epson driver due to
rounding errors in the conversion from mm into imperial measurement.

Thanks, Phil. I guess the last time I tried it was on Windows. On Windows
you can't get to the borderless box unless you have Photo black ink
installed. I was able to fool it by having the printer off and yes the
borderless seems to be possible. However, it puts up several warning messages
saying the quality is less than perfect at bottom of page.

I'm curious, do you find the borderless quality substandard? Have you used
various papers with borderless? I wonder if there is some "cost" or penalty
for using the borderless driver versus the regular one -- i.e. why two of them?

Actually, it looks like QuadToneRIP will get close to the 3mm border.
Anyway, rounding gives 3.18mm which is as close as my ruler will measure.

For those using QTRgui, investigating this led me to discover a bug in
margin handling. I have posted version 0.19 to correct this.
Www.sbillard.org\Shareware\QTRgui.htm. I've also added a Help file. Any
comments would be appreciated.

I was about to reply simply that "no, I don't find any quality loss",
but now add a qualifation--i.e., that most the borderless I've done
have been 4x6" (and these seem just fine). But just now--as I
*closely* examine one of my 8x10 borderless on Premium Glossy--I'm
afraid that I do see a slight loss of density along the first few
millimeters (leading edge)of the print. I don't know why the smaller
prints don't show that, too.

There is also the issue you mention which is that Epson doesn't
support borderless with all papers (AFAIK, just with PK-types like
Premium Glossy, -Semigloss and -Luster). Once, when I had MK ink
installed and wanted to print borderless on Enhanced Matte paper, I
just "lied" to the driver and told it that the media type was Premium
Semigloss. It dutifully printed borderless on the matte paper, and I
guess this is a ploy that might be used without serious penalty as
long as the correct profile is used. Although I wonder: would
incorrectly specifying the media type then cause the driver to use an
incorrect ink configuration (laydown), in spite of the correct profile
being used?

I can't say for sure what the Epson drivers do but I think the paper
selection is mainly for physical properties like thickness, platen gap.
But, who knows, it could use different ink limits.

Ah (slaps head) - that explains why I can no longer do
borderless since I changed from the 2100 driver to
the 2200 (I have a 2100 printer). It's strange - whenever I click
'borderless' now, it changes the page to letter rather than A4.
It seems it's impossible to do borderless A4 in the v5.4 2200
driver... worked fine in the v5.3 2100 driver.

Thanks!

It was always my understanding that the paper driver setting influenced the amount ink
that was laid down, especially in the low end. This is because PREMIUM rc type papers have
the ink on the surface where matte and rag papers have more absorption. But like he said,
you could easily adjust this in curves by moving up the bottom shadow ( toe ) of the curve
if necessary. This might come in to play when you have lots of deep blacks in large areas.

Thanks for the reply Roy. I can confirm that the 2100 drivers allow
borderless with sheet paper. I am looking forward to experimenting
with your RIP software!

I have both drivers installed and both seem to work with a 2100
(except that the 2200 monitor doesn't work). I use the 2200 for BO
and the 2100 for colour, and of course QTR for other B&W.

The real problem with the borderless driver is the amount of image you
loose. The driver resizes the image up by about 5% in each direction
to ensure that you don't get any white edges, but the amount of image
that you loose is just plain silly. I control this in Qimage using
either page margins or borders, but it is not an exact science.

If QTR ever did borderless, what would really be great is if it could
control the amount of overspray, like some other drivers allow you to
do (Canon?)

Yes, but it depends on how you are sizing the image. I use Qimage to
resize the image, and work in metric. The Epson driver mandated a 3mm
margin, so on an A4 page the image size needed to be 204x291mm.

However if you send this sized image to QTR, it splits it over 4
pages. So I had to reduce it to 202x289. You could use a 3.18 margin
I guess, if you print program works in fractions of a mm. I can see
how to do this in Qimage, but there would be some trial and error to
work out precisely what sized image you can send to QTR before it
insists on splitting it over several pages. Just one .01mm too much
would be fatal.

Stephen - I'm having a problem with QTRgui and Qimage working
together. If I start QTRgui after QImage has printed all its print
jobs to file, no problem. But if I start it first, then after the
first print job is done, QTRgui gives me an error message "Unable to
move xxxxx.tif to to the 'Processed' folder. Folder monitoring
disabled".

If I then restart folder monitoring, all works as it should. It's
hard to replicate this problem, as it seems to happen once, and then
goes away. Subsequent attempts to print with QTRgui monitoring the
output folder are successful.

It's only a minor annoyance, but a puzzling one.

RE: [Digital BW] QuadtoneRIP, 2100, winXP - can you print full bleed?

2004-09-21 by Stephen Billard

My guess is that Qimage is creating the file and making it visible while it
is still writing to it. QTRgui discovers it and tries to move it as part of
its printing process. If the file is still open by Qimage, then the move
will fail as indicated.

I'll think about how this might be solved.

Unit conversion is much more complicated than a simple US vs metric
issue. Conversions almost always involve round-offs or truncations.

Here's a few tidbits:

How big is A4 paper? If you start with A0 being 1 square meter and
start halving you end up with A4 = 210.2 x 297.3mm (or so). I believe by
definition all the A sizes are truncated to even mm's -- hence A4 = 210x297mm
So while the halving algoritm is nice in concept, you actually loose .5mm
every once in a while.

The Epson printer being a piece of hardware is actually defined by how
many dots does it accept across a sheet of paper. Even though it is
manufactured in a "metric" country, for all the low level specs the unit
used is 1 dot = 1/360 inch. Margins are defined as 42 dots which is
converted to 2.96mm rounded up to 3 mm.

Then you have printer descriptor files that where defined by Postscript
and Adobe. The base units are points. Postscript points are defined
as 1/72 inch. (aside: there are at least 5 different definitions of what
a point is). Some code handles fractional points, some only integer.
So to be safe when you convert the 42 dot margin, you've got to round
up to 9 points or 45 dots -- losing 3 dots on each side. But of course
when you go to metric again some other piece of software again takes
the "safe" route and rounds 9pts = 3.175mm up to 4 mm.

So you can see things get whittled down at every turn. Mac OS X takes
the approach of just chopping off images that are slightly too big. That
may be the better choice than splitting into multiple pages which
never seems very desirable.

Announce New QuadtoneRIP 2.1 -- Epson 4000 -- Mac OS X

2004-09-21 by Roy Harrington

A new release for QuadToneRIP for Mac OS X is now generally available.

The major additions are:

1) Support for the Epson 4000 printer.

2) Significantly simplified installation -- much more plug and play.

3) Much nicer print dialog page -- QTRs own page and removable of
    numerous extraneaous gimp-print options.

4) Improved positioning of images on page. Specific centering in Page Setup

----------------------------

There's been a fair amount of testing by others with both Jaguar and Panther.
So the product should be quite stable, print quality on the 4000 is very nice
and fast. There are numerous paper profiles. Thanks to Carl for his
contributions.

Nice!

Interface has "easy to get to" settings! Printed a few images with an Epson 890/UT2 -
worked perfectly.

I like the Centering in Page Setup - works well.

Quick question. Installing the QTR 2.1 for an Epson 7000 which install script do I use as
there are two? Install7000ipp or Install7000

Thanks Carl S. for all your help with my many 7000/QTR questions - you and Roy are the
best

Install7000 is for using the USB interface. Install7000ipp is for
an ethernet card interface, you have to provide an IP address.

Thanks Roy. How much work has there been done affecting the Epson 21/2200?
Will I have to redo my curves?

I suspect not given this is a release for OS-X. You will have to wait for
Roy to release an update for the Windows version.

Hi Steve,

No need to redo the curves. But you must re-install them with
the new Install2200 script. Just copy the script into your own
folder with the curves and double-click on it.

After I corrected, cropped (8x10), and saved the picture in PS7, i dropped it in print-2200 bat to print. But it did not print correctly. Only a portion of the picture printed 8x10 size on the paper. What am I doing wrong?

FYI I get the following when I run Install 2100:

Last login: Wed Sep 22 21:06:24 on console
/Volumes/QTRIP2.1/Profiles/InstallScripts/Install2Welcome to Darwin!
You have mail.
100.command; exit
[Vigor12:~] stevekal%
/Volumes/QTRIP2.1/Profiles/InstallScripts/Install2100.command; exit
/usr/local/bin/quadprofile: line 21: *.txt: No such file or directory
ls: *.quad: No such file or directory
Curves Installed Successfully
logout
[Process completed]

And of course there are no curves. As painful as it may be, you may find it
a good idea to edit Carl's curves and create a set for the 2100. Other wise
the Install 2100 doesn't get anyone anywhere.

Cheers

The InstallScripts folder has all the install scripts for those creating th=
eir own
curves. The 2200-UC (and UT and UT7) folders have the curves and the
install2100 script for the 2100.

Re: [Digital BW] Announce New QuadtoneRIP 2.1 -- Epson 4000 -- Mac OS X

2004-09-23 by Steve Kale

OK now I am getting confused. I went to the InstallScripts folder and ran
Install 2100 which resulted in my earlier post. It installed a printer
called Quad 2100 or something similar. Then I saw the Install 2100 sitting
in the 2200-UC folder. I then looked at Carl's ReadMe2200 saying that the
printer had to be called QUAD2200 so I uninstalled Quad 2100 and did a
manual install calling it QUAD2200 (the printer name I had used for
simplicity sake in my own curves where I began by editing Carl's old text
files.) I dropped my old curves in using the old Run-Install-Curves script
and it seems to have worked fine. But I just took a look at Carl's 2200-UC
curves text files and I now see that they do not have printer names although
the descriptive verbage is still in there. I assume the Install2100 script
in the 2200-UC folder adds the right printer name along the way? If old
curve text files have a different printer name do they need to be edited to
either drop the printer name or change it to Quad 2100 if one is to discard
the old Run-Install-Curves and use the new one? Sorry but there is a lot of
conflicting stuff here. I've got it working I think but it was not very
intuitive.

2004-09-23 by Roy Harrington

Hi Steve,

I guess if you know all the history of how things evolved, it is a little
confusing. The new install scripts do a whole lot more than before
they basically do all the details.

First they Add the printer automatically instead of having to deal
with Print Center or Print Setup. They automatically look for a USB
printer with the right model number and create the printer with the
correct name and connect everything together. So you'll get a
Quad2100 as long as a 2100 is hooked up to the computer.

Next they do all the Quad-Profile stuff with all the curves in the same
folder. Since the same curves work on both the 2100 and 2200, the
PRINTER names have been removed from the curve file and the
install script provides the printer name. (If you have printer names
in the curve file that would override the install script printer name.)

If you have some of your own curve files, I'd take out the PRINTER names
(and if you remove the CURVENAMES it'll just use the file name for the
CURVENAME). Put the curves in the same folder and run Install2100.

Sorry about the confusion, I have lots of ReadMe and other docs
that need updating. Hope this clears it up.

Roy

Thanks. I figured as much. I know your priorities have been a PC version
and then the 4000 but I guess you're due for a tidy up. I sent you an email
with a couple of other questions. One more please: if I were to create a
new curve does dropping it in the folder with all the other 2100 curves and
running Install2100 in that folder end up adding a second printer or will it
work fine.

Roy-

Can QTR be used with a 4000 via Firewire?

What changes would have to be made to the install script for this to work?

Thanks,

Bill
