Yellowing of paper by antioxidants

Yellowing of paper by antioxidants

2004-09-11 by Paul Roark

There have been occasional reports of PhotoRag being yellowed by tape on the
outside of packages and by the rubber clips that stop large format printer
paper rolls from unrolling when not in use.

I ran across this article, apparently by Mitsubishi Paper Mill that
indicates antioxidants might be responsible for this yellowing. The
following are snips from this article.

(See http://web.infoweb.ne.jp/mpm/inkjet/english/storage.html)

"Materials of clear files contain plenty of antioxidants to prevent
discoloration and deterioration by oxidization. Antioxidants contained in
the film are diffused as vapor, although they are small in quantity. When
inkjet papers are kept in a clear file, antioxidants diffused from the clear
file reach the surface of the inkjet papers. As the ink receptor layer of an
inkjet paper consists of fine particles, it has a large porous surface area
that easily absorbs chemical compounds. The antioxidants absorbed change the
color of the paper to yellow through air oxidation."

.

"Tape consists of a thin plastic film and glue, which generally contain
antioxidants. Yellowing due to tape is caused by the same mechanism as
yellowing due to storage in a file."

"Rubber bands and rubber rolls contain antioxidants to prevent them from
hardening during storage. Yellowing is caused by the same mechanism as
yellowing due to storage in a file."

Hello Paul,

Do you know what is meant by "clear file" in the article?

[Digital BW] Re: Yellowing of paper by antioxidants

2004-09-12 by Tyler Boley

Well, clearly there is more to this. I have been storing my pigment
quad prints in clear bags since there has been pigment quads to make.
Never have they caused yellowing. THough I have seen my maddening
share of coating yellowing from other plastics (actually, like the
Epson roll clip they seem more like a vinyl), and adhesives, these
particular bags haven't been a problem. Nor have print sleeves from
Light Impressions, which seem more like a mylar.
For what it's worth,
Tyler

yellowing in the sleeves I've been using for over three years now.

Two more quick points, the yellowing I've seen has definitely not been
confined to PhotoRag or even Hahnemuhle, but other coated art papers
as well. Also, the packaging tape used on more recent orders has been
done with a tape that seems different, and I've experienced no recent
yellowing out of the box, as Jim said they seem to have addressed this.
Lastly if it's helpful, this quote from someone who seemed to know his
stuff-

"All rubber based PSA adhesives we have tested turned
the coatings (fine art paper) yellow. This not only will happen at the
point of
contact but the contamination can travel/as a matter of fact if you
have a poly
print bag (not Polyester) and put a piece of rubber based tape on top
of it the
print inside will yellow. USE ACRYLIC ADHESIVE PSA."
