hi everyone

2001-07-29 by Johnny Deadman

I guess a lot of you will know me from other lists, but here's a 'hi'
anyway. Thanks to Martin for starting this list...as soon as I heard about
it I knew it was a good idea.

I use the piezo inks on an 1160 run off a Mac... I *was* printing mainly on
EAM and Somerset Enhanced but since EAM now apparently goes green I need to
find another main sqeeze.

Here's a question someone may be able to answer: what's the best paper
available in rolls? I have some panoramas I want to print BIG, like 12"x36".
and how do you feed it into an 1160?

Hi John,

Get the Epson Roll Paper Holder part no C811061 (in the UK) - it costs about
?22 over here. So far, I've only ever used Epson Photo paper in the rolls
with it... I now have a 7000 however, so I have even less reason to use it!
I think I will still aim to use cut-down sheets where possible though.
Flattening out the paper before printing can be a drag, and risks damaging
the paper. I think that A1 sheets (goodness knows what you can get in A1
sheets???) would give you two strips of the noted dimensions??? I just
checked a UK Hahnemuhle price list, and they skip from A2 to 36" rolls. By
the way, Epson Panoramic paper is A2 cut in half length-ways - I quite like
the format and size - but am planning something similar to yourself for
larger prints.

Can't answer you about anything else, but I am starting to get to grips with
Somerset Enhanced Velvet for some of my softer images.

I like it!

Hey Johnny!

Last night I came upon a bio and pics about you on Luminous Landscape. Been a while since I visited there but smiled when I saw a familiar name. I am not sure if I got this right but I believe I read that you spent a year shooting the same spot (Victoria station or somewhere?) is that right? Was it daily/weekly/monthly or every blue moon?

The pano paper holder is something I also want (a solution that is). I saw a poster today at lunch that shows the Fab Four and it is a print about 12 x36" and looked great in BW on the wall at the local pub.

Nij seems to have it down.

Keep us informed of success/trials and tips please as I will probably follow for panos in a few months.

Steadman

John,

Welcome! Glad you to see you here.

I too am still looking for the EAM replacement with no great luck to
date. Could live with Turner and German Etching but want that
smoother finish and brighter white. Steadman says he has something up
his sleeve and to be patient.

Any serious choice in rolls or even long sheets for the 13" wide
printers appears to be non existent as far as I can tell. I did some
shots with a 75mm lens on my 4X5 with a 2:1 print ratio in mind and a
12 by 24 would be great.

I see Crane is making the new wonder paper for Epson. Antonis has met
Robert Rex of Crane and who also contacted me about coating Museo (I
hereby certify that I did not yield to any blandisments of free trips
to Las Vegas, wads of cash, free paper, etc.) I have invited him to
join the group and perhaps we can at least make our wants and needs
known.

Panarama Paper was Re: hi everyone

2001-07-30 by mwesley250@earthlink.net

Hi Nij,

Welcome aboard!

I see the panarama and roll paper on the Epson site but as I recall
the results with the Piezo inks is less than rewarding. Perhaps if
there is enough interest and agreement on which paper, some of us
could get together and place a special for 13" rolls or say 13 X 30
or 13 X 36 sheets? Having seen the roll adapters for the Epson
desktops I have some doubts about their ability to handle the heavy
papers.

Well Steadman, I wouldn't say I felt quite so confident :)

I shoot fair bit of XPAN - so I guess you've got to get used to panoramic
printing! But I am just thinking about doing my first ever 'editions' of

RE: [DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint] Panarama Paper was Re: hi everyone

2001-07-30 by Nij

Hi Martin,

Yes, the roll holders are not too substantial! Something I should have added
earlier is that I _think_ I read somewhere that you can get 4' wide rolls
cut down to 2' wide - or presumably even 1'. I think I heard / read the term
'band-saw' which from my school days suggested a very wobbly rough cut! I
guess a professional could do better...

Some of you may be aware that I just got a 7000 (big GRINS) - it seems
ironic, but I have had more issues with curling (and print-head scuffing) on
the Epson Semigloss paper roll provided that I ever recall having with
roll-holder on the 1160. This may be for two possible reasons, including
paper thickness and the 1160's supposed design to handle only thinner
papers - i.e. it pushes the paper harder and flatter before the print-head -
as opposed to the 7000's design to handle thicker papers etc etc. (I am
printing Epson OEM on Epson OEM whilst I await my Piezography Pro24!)

But please, don't take me too seriously just yet, as a wide format printer
is a total different ballgame and I feel like I am just about to experience
another great learning curve! Having said that - it would be rather nice if
my XPAN shots could be enlarged to 24" by 72"!!!!

Once I get my workflow sorted out I will put together a detailed tutorial on
how to do turn a series of handheld images into a panorama.

Panarama Paper was Re: hi everyone

2001-07-30 by mwesley250@earthlink.net

Nij,

It should be possible to get say 36" rolls cut into 2 - 13" and 1 -
10". I am not sure how paper-converting plants slit their paper. From
my old computer tape manufacturing days, it may be slit as it is
unwound off of a bigger, wider roll by passing it through a single or
set of rotary scissors and then the narrower strips are wound up on
separate cores. This was pretty fragile stuff.

Paper might be done using a "baloney slicer" that pushes the roll
against rotary knifes to cut it into pieces. Or they may have
something completely different. Band saw would likely give an uneven
edge as you say and I suspect this might be a big problem with long
sheets.

I think I will take my comments on the 7000 to a new thread. Your
large Xpan prints sound really intriguing. Hmmm...Ah...you wouldn't
care to share those in a print exchange by any chance?

Thanks,

Martin

No I haven't but I am beginning to make print sales and since Cone says it
can go green, there goes the neighbourhood. Actually I have grown to dislike
the midtones on EAM (so boring) so there's another reason to switch.

Did I read that the greening is ozone related? That's odd because I had the
worst case of orange shift on the old Epson Glossy with 1270 inks that I
ever heard of... 12-24 hours to go bright tangerine. But no greens yet.

yeah... they just don't happen for me... if I'm printing for midtones (most
of my 35mm ISN'T printed for midtones but a harsher William Klein feel) then
I want a thick lush gray you can swim around in. The EAM is about 2" deep
and I want 6 feet.

I've got many prints lying around, as well as in various containers,
and none of them exhibit a green shift that I've noticed. Some I've

Nij,

do you have the space to set up a roll holder about half a meter
back from the printer? seems like that would give the paper a
chance to relax before it got near the print heads.

A sold print is a different matter, if you're not framing them for sale
(assuming it is an environmental cause). What don't you like about
the midtones - something that can't be corrected with a curve?

Todd is sending some Epson papers, as well as some others, off
for ozone testing, so we should have results in a few weeks.

EAM & Piezo Green Shift Issues was Re: hi everyone

2001-07-30 by mwesley250@earthlink.net

Tim,

I too have been an EAM user and I have not had any of my Piezo prints
shift green at this point. I did receive a file off line awhile back
of a scan of a green shifted print. It was not a green tinge it was
bright dollar bill green. Nothing subtle about it. Others seem to be
reporting something subtler so there may be two problems going on
here.

(If anyone would like to scan simultaneously a print they consider to
have the green shift side-by-side with one the consider to not have a
green shift, I can post the image in the Photos section of the group
so that we can begin to get an idea of what everyone is talking
about.)

However, the green shift is not limited to EAM it has been reported
on other papers as well. There is one confirmed incident of the paper
and ink shifting green in an elevator. I also don't think that there
is any hard evidence to blame the green shift on ozone. I believe it
was just an assumption.

As you mentioned Todd is sending some prints for ozone chamber
testing and I will contribute a coated and uncoated EAM print to the
test so hopefully the ozone question will be answered one way or the
other.

There is another issue with EAM and that is the fact that it tests
acid on the core and back with two types of pH pens (both Steadman
and I duplicated the test result) which calls into question its life
as a paper even if the image holds up.

So the search for a replacement.

Martin

I know that paper sourcing and cost is an issue in the EU. I hope
that someone will realise there is a market and start selling locally
for you. I have a box of Torchon sitting on the table waiting to be
tried. I'll let you know what I think.

John,

Think coating. Still working on it but I'm past 2" maybe down a
couple of feet don't know if I can get to 6. Hope to post some more
results this week. The Varathane is looking promising.

Will not be to everyone's taste but hope I am close to a very cheap
method for people who want to try it out.

Martin,

there were (at least) two points to my post. First, find out how
extensive the color shift has been, second to state that I haven't
had a shift in a less-than-perfect envionment. From the recent
postings I wouldn't sell a print on EAM, but do think it is good for
work prints - proofing, portfolio. I don't know that is is much better
than the Epson Heavyweight Matte for that use, though, which for
me is less expensive and more readily available.

Anything else is special order, and I can at least find Hahnemühle
and Somerset papers in the EU, so no extraordinary taxes or
shipping costs. Until I find a paper with the DMax and velvet
surface of EAM, I'll be using Torchon for prints I expect to stay
around for a while. The search is interesting for me as well.

Thanks,

Martin

RE: [DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint] Panarama Paper was Re: hi everyone

Tim,

Is there an off-the-shelf product that does that? I just dread to think how
Heath-Robinson (is this an international, or only English phrase for
something 'hacked together' - or perhaps 'an over-worked solution') it would
end up being - I'm thinking backdrop-roll holder.

The solution I've been thinking of is to have a spare roll core (I could
actually probably use a postage tube) to reverse-curl the leading edge of
the paper. Using the tube as a former should help make the reverse-curl
without damaging the paper... I hope. Once again, I'll let you know how I
get on.

Nij,

do you have the space to set up a roll holder about half a meter
back from the printer? seems like that would give the paper a
chance to relax before it got near the print heads.

Doesn't seem like it would be too hard to rig, without getting too
complicated. Would depend on the space and what you can
salvage - a couple of light stands and a roller on bearings would
work, I'd think, with maybe a board or wire grid between that and
the printer to avoid bad sags. I don't know "Heath-Robinson", you
have the etymology?

RE: [Digital BW] RE: Panarama Paper was Re: hi everyone

2001-07-31 by Nij

Tim,

Heath Robinson was a cartoonist who drew weird and wonderful contraptions
and machines - the best parallel I can think of in film would be the 'mad
scientist father' in <ahem> Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (!!!) or I'm sure that
Laurel and Hardy or some of the old silent 'slapstick / Charlie Chaplin'
movies would have had equivalents. The kind of thing where someone or
something pedals a bike that turn a cog that drives a shaft that drives an
arm that moves a grabber that picks up an egg that drops egg down a slide
that is caught in a pan that is held by an arm... you get the pictuire I'm
sure. Another typical example would be the 'kick you out of bed in the
morning machine'! :) Hence, in the UK, 'Heath Robinson' means 'hacked
together' or perhaps 'over-engineered' or perhaps 'over-engineered, but with
backwards-technology'!

I'm still bearing your idea in mind... Nothing is quick at my end at the
moment :) I think even light is slowing down here... I can prove it! It's
getting lighter much later in the mornings than it did just two weeks ago :)
