Scanning Tech Pan

Scanning Tech Pan

2004-02-19 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
a while ago, when I still was using an Epson 1660 for scanning, I got a roll of Tech Pan and was totally blown away by the tones.

Then I got a Minolta SE5400 and can't get a decent scan from TP (every other film is great) - I can't get rid of the contrast and the highlights and/or shadows are severely clipped. No frames are useable.

I'm using VueScan and if anyone can suggest settings that work with TP, I'd be forever in your debt.

In the meantime it's back to Tmax100 or T400CN.

thanks,
Richard

Use no color balance and do the adjustments (curves) in photoshop (if that's what you
are using) manually to your liking.

I scanned some TechPan not too long ago, some older stuff and like all my
black and white scans I scanned them in colour neg setting. I am sure others
are doing this do...gives great tonal range I think. Using a Kodak RFS 3600
- rather a dinosaur now. :-)

Re: [Digital BW] Scanning Tech Pan

2004-02-19 by Anders Jonsson

Hi Richard,
I scan a lot of b/w film on both 1640XL Epson and Nikon 8000ED, with great results. I recently worked with the TechPan and did all scans at 16bit grey scale. Got very nice and smooth tones using OEM drivers. If you haven't tried 16 bit settings at 4000dpi do that. Before printing I sometimes even add a bit of a filmgrain to the image, to get the right "feel" of it. The TP is so extremely fine that high end scanners pullls out to much information which can also have a negative effect. Then I would try to go down in dpi and then scan RAW and do all corrections in PS.
With tricky negs, thin old restoration negs for example, I scan in RGB and then work them in duotone mode, before converting to greyscale.
I hope this helped a bit, there are so many different solutions out there.
Regards,
Anders

Using QuadTone RIP 2.0 on the MAC OS 10.3 question....

2004-02-19 by David R. Spielman

Greetings,

Can anyone explain to me what the workflow is for using the
profiling/calibration function in QuadTone RIP 2.0?
I've used the profiles that came with the package for Epson Enhanced Matt
and they are wonderful with my Epson 2200 printer.
I'd like to experiment with the Epson UltraSmooth paper, but I think it will
need its own curves.

I tried to follow the documentation about curve creation that came with the
download but quite honestly, I couldn't make heads or tails out if it. I was
more confused after I read it than I was before.

After I fully understand this process (making curves) I'd be happy to write
up a detailed tutorial with lots of screen shots and procedures and make it
available to the rest of the list. I'm sure I'm not the first person to be
confused about how to do this, and my searches of the list archive and files
section didn't turn up anything.

Anyone want to help me with this.

Best Regards,

David R. Spielman

Hi David,

Admittedly, the documentation is in need of some work. I've concentrated
more lately on completed curves rather than the process. The docs do
assume you know the general idea of using multiple gray inks and color
inks for toning.

I can help with more specific questions.

Regards,
Roy

Why don't you try Carl Schofield's PremierArt Fine Art Hot Press paper profile for
UltraSmooth? PFA and the Epson UltraSmooth seem to be the same paper.

And where would one find this profile?

Is this an ICC profile, or is it a curve for the QuadTone RIP?

David,

The Premier Fine Art printing profiles for QTR 2.0 beta9 are in the
QTR_2.0_b9_Profiles.sit archive on my file sharing site in the
QuadToneRIP 2.0 folder:
http://homepage.mac.com/scho/FileSharing2.html
and also on Roy's site:
http://www.harrington.com/QTR/2200-UC.sit
There are warm, cool, and sepia profiles for printing with the 2200 UC
inkset.

Problems Installing QTR2.0...

2004-03-13 by dsand20

Hello,

I'm trying to install Quadtone RIP 2.0 on my Mac using OSX Jaguar. The
problem I'm having is that I cannot locate any Quad Curve Files (*.quad) or
the printer folders in the CurveDropBox. I have installed GIMP print, Ghost
print, and QTR2.0 as per instructions. Am I missing a step somewhere? I
would appreciate any help for this problem.

Thanks,
David Sanders

Hi David,

What printer and inks are you using?
On the website there are profiles for several printer/ink combinations.
They have install scripts.

Thanks for your response, Roy.

I am using a Mac G3 with the Epson 3000, Piezography Piezotone Selenium
and PR paper. After loading the program I looked in the CurveDropBox folder
and it was empty. I quit the program and re-loaded it with the same result. It's
not loading any descriptor files or folders. Am I missing a step?

Re: Problems Installing QTR2.0...

2004-03-14 by Roy Harrington

David,

Ok, I see where you are now. There are two main steps that you need to do.

First is Add the printer in the Print Center, look at the directions but the idea
is to <option>Add, go thru the Advanced menu and create a printer queue
with the name Quad3000.

Then you'll need to install curves for the printer/ink combo (this is what
creates the folders and files in CurveDropBox). The 3000 isn't a printer I've
used so what's there is just an approximation. Under CurveDesign>ExampleInks
there's a ink descriptor file called 3000-fs which should be your starting
point. (click on Run-Quad-Profile and drop 3000-fs into the window and
hit return).

There's a lot more info in GettingStarted and Calibration.

[Digital BW]Problems QTR2.0 and Epson 5500

2004-04-04 by Hans Nohlberg

Hi,

Anyone with experiences from QTR 2.0 or Gimp Print, Epson Stylus Pro
5500 and Panther 10.3.2?
It just doesn't print with Gimp Print. The only driver that works is
the one from Epson.
I added a Gimp Print driver without Quad and it didn't print with that either.
There is probably no problem with QTR, all is there, the printer, the
ppds and the curves.
In the Printer dialog box it first seems to work, "Sending file to
printer", "Ready to print".
But then the file just disappears and the box is empty - "Nothing to print".
Have tried a lot of different settings but nothing works.
Sometimes you first get the message "Illegal printer setting" for a setting.
But next time with same setting you don't get it.

Any ideas?
Hans

Hi Hans,

I don't know of anyone else using a 5500, so you may be the first.
You should run Print-Gimp-Errorlog and email me the results.
Possibly there's a clue there.

Hi Roy,

Had a look at list of supported printers at the Gimp-Print website.
The 5500 is not listed as "Fully Operational" only "Operational".
I will make a copy of the errorlog and send it to you.

Thanks
Hans
