Problems connecting to Paul Roark's website

2004-02-18 by Paul Murphy

Hi,
I have been trying to get onto Paul's site for weeks and every time I
try I get the "cannot find server" page. I have tried numerous links
from posted messages and also links from the MIS web site. I have
also tried variations of the main address. Nothing works. Just tried
this one: http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/ but still no luck. I never
have any problems connecting to any other web site.

Any help would be appreciated as I would love to see his UT2 info.

Thanks,
Paul.

Occasionally people outside the U.S. have trouble accessing my web site.
I'm not sure why. The problem seems to go away eventually.

I'll send the Html file off list.

Okay, then it's not a DNS problem, it's a routing problem. I have no idea

Paul,

It seems a lot of folks are having trouble with your
isp. I happen to run a small server that houses other
photogrpahers and artists effectively and
inexpensively. If you'd like to transefer over, let me
know. Your domain name can be pointed within hours.
Multiple T-3 connections, 300 megs of space, FrontPage
Extentions, FTP, 20 email addresses, etc. Never had
any complaints about not being able to connect.
Consider it a donation for all the work you've done
for everyone.

I do.

> What does this tracert report tell us?:

It tells you the different nodes through which your connection to
another site passes, although with the delays involved in getting to
each consecutive node. For some reason, in your case, the connection
isn't getting past the node at hop number 16 (gigchannel9 ...), which is
a node in Texas belonging to Verizon (a major Internet provider).

When I access the site, my path takes a much more direct route, with
a much smaller delay than the one you are seeing at the far end. Since
I can reach the site and you cannot, chances are that it's not Paul's
site that has the problem, but some other link between you and his site
(most likely the Verizon link at which your traceroute stops). If it
has been this way for six months, there's probably a configuration
problem somewhere in the network.

I agree. The ISP with the routing problem has to fix it. Good luck in
getting that done (whether or not it gets fixed depends on how many
people complain and/or how vigilant the ISP is about verifying that all
routing works).

If your ISP provides proxy servers for Web surfing, you could try going
through those, although there's a good chance that they won't work,
either.

It's possible that the ISP is blocking all traffic from certain parts of
the world. Some ISPs do this to stall spam, in the somewhat brain-dead
belief that everything that comes from, say, Singapore can only be spam
and nothing else.

Can you do a traceroute to see how far the connection gets?

As an experiment I visited three internet cafes today, all use
different ISP's, and I could not get onto Paul's site from any of
them. I am located in Australia. There is a post from another
Australian (Peter Marquis-Kyle) with the same problem. Perhaps our
government finds Paul Roark's fade tests a security threat given the
amount of sunshine we receive down under :-)

Just clocked into this thread - I have the same problem as the Aussies
and the Subcontinent. Must be incoming traffic from the Pacific. I
know nothing of the routing stuff but happy to do something to trace
the problem with instructions. I am a newbie and would really like to
take a look at Paul's site - have been trying without success for 3
months.

Paul - what is your call on using an Epson 1200 for BW? Would that be
MIS VM, fill your own carts? Although the 1200 is listed in the MIS
workflow page for VM, they don't list pre-filled carts or CFS with
these inks for the 1200.
Thanks

I don't think there are too many pipes between Australia and the rest of
the world. All the ISPs you tried may be going through the same Verizon
node that seems to have the problem.

The curves are there for the 1200 & MIS VM. The 1200 is getting a bit old,
but I've seen some excellent B&W from it. I think some have even used the
old curves with the UT1 inkset in the 1200. It's not up to running the UT2
inkset, however.
