Gimp-print 5.0 Alpha

Gimp-print 5.0 Alpha

2004-01-17 by Ernst Dinkla

Since 11-1-2004 the Gimp-print 5.0 Alpha is available. That will
be the end of the 4.3 and 4.2 range I guess. According to the
information given it is not yet a completely stable version.

Is this a suitable version for a new QTR setup or is it too
different for an easy upgrade ?

As its an alpha version I wouldn't use it unless you fancy debugging
Gimp-print! I'd stick with the current 4.x versions.
There must be a reasonable chance anyway that there will be
incompatibles with current versions of QTR.

Hi Ernst,

I'd stick to a stable version rather than have to spend time debugging. To
my mind the big jump will be when the gimp plug-in will recognize the QTR
drivers.

Roger,

I had no intention to use it. At first I got the impression that
it actually is the stable version of the 4.3 series, that one was
more or less promised soon.
Now I understand that it is a new branch for development.

I agree that with the Gimp plug-in recognising QTR we have a far
better setup. Robert Krawitz knows that it doesn't work now as I
have written him about it. But he was busy bringing out 5.0 :-)

Meanwhile the Gimp-print port to Risc Os seems to be finished,
the Risc PC that I still have will soon be able to print with it.
Wonder whether it can be changed to a QTR version too. At least
on that OS I know a bit better what can be changed. Memory is
limited on that system though. But there's a PC emulator for Risc
Os.

Makes me wonder why Gimp-print still isn't ported to the PC. The
Risc Os version was a one man job by Martin that didn't take more
than 3 months.

Hi Ernst,

I've taken cursory looks at the 4.3 version as it's evolved. It's quite a bit
larger product now. There are many new features, but my take is that
they are mostly for areas that wouldn't benefit QTR. QTR uses just the raw
printing level. So my inclination is to just stay with the existing system.

Windows photo editors under Linux?

2004-01-17 by Roger L Sopher

Ernst,

Just musing about, have you tried running one of the windows photo editors
in Linux using wine, Cross Over or VM? I've never been a big fan of
emulators but if Picture Window or the like would work then one could
possibly - probably print directly to QTR and be able to tweak the image as
well.

GIMP 4.2.6 (was Gimp-print 5.0 Alpha)

2004-01-24 by J Michael Sullivan

Any issues using v4.2.6 vs. v4.2.5?

If you are concerned about QTR, it's not relevant. QTR uses code that is
mostly based on an early version of 4.3.5 that I've tuned some print
parameters. When you run QTR the version of gimp-print that you
use is built into QTR -- downloading your own gimp-print is totally
separate.
