Mac for RIP

Mac for RIP

2003-08-02 by Roger L Sopher

I found a "Beige" G3 mac in good shape at a great price and a "Blue and
White" at a not as good a price. Question, are either (or both) of these
enough machine to run either of the two rips that have been given pretty
high praise on this forum?

I have about decided a linux box/freeBSD box to run QuadTone is more
trouble than it is worth, particularly the lack of a friendly interface in
linux. If either of the G3's are practical then they are within my price
range where G4's are still a little dear.

Hi Roger

What are you paying for these?

I'm not sure, but the beige may be more difficult to use w/ OSX? You might
want to enquire on the OSX lists @

Hi Bill,

A Beige with 256mb ram and a 266 processor, a scrawney hard drive , key
board, mouse is $119.00 I have a number of hard drives I can put in so that
is of no consequence if the bios can recognize IDE 30gb drives and larger. I
really don't want to go SCSI if it can be avoided. I do have a PCI IDE 133
interface card (for a pc) that might provide a solution. My major question
is whether this machine will be able to print something in less than a week
:-))

Comes with OS 8.6 and is supposedly upgradable to OS X.

I an running the Imageprint rip on a "Blue and White" G3 and it seem to
be working just fine. You can up grade the "Blue and White" to a G4
500MZ for about $300.00

Get a bottom of the line eMac. It's a G4 and is probably much better than the G3. I have one but I bought the top of the line and maxed out the RAM. Have over a gig. It has a 17 inch flat CRT screen. Very sharp. I have not been disappointed with the performance or the price.

I managed to install OS X onto a low-end beige G3, but it was
extremely frustrating until I discovered the magic trick. It turns
out that I needed to update the firmware on the machine's scsi
controller, and once I did that it all went very simply. It was only
by dumb luck that I googled across a mostly japanese article about the
fix and was able to pick out enough english/geek words to make an
educated guess.

I can't speak to whether it has enough horsepower or not, but it
certainly *should*. You might just have to be a bit more patient.

That Beige G3 can handle IDE/ATA drivesof most any capacity.
Maximum RAM capacity is 768mb, which about what you should
put in it for this work, IMO. An, yes, it *will* run OS X, though
perhaps not with the same sparkle and snap as with a faster
Mac; the good news is that it's easily upgradable in terms of
processor speed.

Here's a link for software to install OS X on older Macs:

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
