1160 problem

1160 problem

2002-10-20 by bgs

To anyone who knows,
My 1160 won't detect the black cartridge position. I have been using MIS-VM for about a year with virtually no problems. Had a bad nozzle check which doesn't happen too often and it didn't change after a couple of cleanings. I eventually tried an Epson cartridge which didn't work. It was one I used once before, plugged it and retaped it. I tried a few other things which were futile and embarrassing so I won't go into it. MIS, who has been helpful when needed is sending me a new cartridge for the CFS and an after market Epson cartridge. The red light(black) stays on and then up pops the cannot detect cartridge message. I have a feeling that the new cartridges won't be detected either. I was easy to detect after being covered with black pig as was my monitor, mouse etc. You may let your imagination run free at my expense and laugh out loud if you wish. I would have liked to see what I looked like. What a schmuck I am. Yes, my face also--and my favorite hooded sweatshirt which is the rob the 7/11 type. Anyone have any similar experience? I will call Epson tomorrow(Oct. 21). Strange, I bought this thing Oct. 22 last year. Suggestions appreciated. I should receive the new cartridges in a couple of days.

Thanks.......Barry Schaffer

1160 problem

2004-09-12 by Peter Marquis-Kyle

One of my Epson 1160 printers, after sitting unused for a couple of weeks, was
not printing properly. This machine happens to be loaded with Epson colour carts
at the moment. To begin with, the nozzle check showed a lot of gaps in all of
CMY. With a few cleaning cycles it only got worse -- all colours disappeared.

When I moved the head away from the park position, in preparation for a dose of
Windex, I saw something amiss -- there was a strange piece of material sticking
up inside the machine, about where the colour heads would park.

I removed this object with tweezers. It seems to be some kind of thin foam
material, thoroughly soaked with black ink. It's a bit less than 2 inches / 50mm
long, and looks like it is die cut, perhaps part of a gasket or seal. I have put
a picture of it here:

I'll take the printer to an Epson repairer as soon as I can. But in the meantime
I would like to know what this object is, and what kind of repair the printer is
likely to require.

Any informed suggestions?

Peter,

That's probably a piece of foam that's supposed to pick up excess ink
(and collect the ink as you clean the heads).

May need to be replaced - as I understand it - all Epson printers have
this "feature" - and on some of the large ones it necessitates a visit
by a service man - some newer large format ones have a "drawer" you can
replace.

You may be able to replace this yourself..

Best,

Christer

Peter,

I couldn't get your page to load, but know what you
are referring to. Off to the right of the parking pad
is a slot where that foam piece sits. It is attached
to a small nub and the long end reaches down into the
printer. I was having terrible smudging on prints,
and found that saturated piece to be the culprit (it
became saturated and a bit bent - then began resting
on the bottom of the print head, coating it with ink).

I could only speculate as to its function, but when I
removed it the smudging and spotting on my prints
disappeared. That was when I first had the machine
and made about 200 prints after without ill effect.

I wonder about its purpose because when I had that
machine refurbished, a new foam piece was there. I'll
keep it until it starts mucking up prints, then remove
it.
