FWIW, there is a tab in nikon scan for "negative prescan", the default is
"automatic", try changing this to "low contrast - neutral" and scan as a
negative in greyscale.  Set the output gamma in preferences to match the
gamma you use in photoshop. Set the preview gamma to match your monitor
profile gamma. This should prevent clipping on most (if not all) silver
negatives. Make sure you scan in high bit mode as the scan may be low in
contrast.

This works on my ls-2000 using nikonscan 3.12

I've ordered the 8000 and I hope that this tab is active when using the 8000
as well.

Prefs options mentioned on the LS2000 are definitely not available in 3.1.2
for the 4000. You can basically turn pre-scan auto exposure on or off for
negs and positive scans, but don't have any control over what kind of AE is
performed. Interesting that they have eliminated this feature in the
"improved" scanner! Wonder why....

Even so, I've been pretty pleased overall with my 4000. Only observation is
that it seems to like a more overexposed neg than what you would normally
choose to print.

As I recall, those prefs only appear if you tell the scanner you are
scanning negative film.  At least that¹s how they were on my nikon scanners.

doug,

the "negative prescan" options are not in the prefs, but in the controls.

Look at the bottom of the tools pallet under "scanner extras" - "prescan
mode". "automatic" is the default, scroll down to "lo cont. neutral"

This is the last option before "calibrate" in the tools pallet.
