Proofing papers

Proofing papers

2016-08-21 by Richard Smallfield

Hello,
some may remember me from many years ago.

I use either Ilford Gold Fibre Silk or Canson Baryta Photographique for my exhibition prints and want to find a good proofing paper for them, as the cheaper papers I've found tend to be too bright, making them a poor match for the papers I do my final prints on.

The best cheap proofing paper I've found has been PremierArt Economy Satin, as its hue and surface is the closest I've found in an RC paper to thr FB papers I use - but my previous suppliers no longer sell it.

Anyway, alternative suggestions would be most welcome.

Many thanks,
Richard

Why fool around with a substitute paper? Just proof on the paper that you want to make the final print on.

Cost is the reason. Using an inexpensive proofing paper lets you experiment and adjust without burning through a pile of the expensive final paper. Then when you feel you are where you want to be you can make final adjustments on proof pieces of the final paper.

Maybe you should invest in better color management so that your soft proof
on the monitor is a nearly perfect match to your final print. Also, I almost
always have scraps of by good papers around and when in doubt, I run a
section of the image on the scrap.

Canson Baryta (along with Museo Silver Rag) used to be my standard baryta papers. Now the new Red River Baryta v. 2 is taking over that category for me. It is very similar to the Canson product and can even use the same profiles, and it costs less.

Is that San Gabriel paper? That's all I can find.

Thanks for the tips. I actually need a whole new computer as my Dell Laptop is old and doesn't have a great monitor and my external monitor isn9;t working (probably a fault with the laptop).

I use a Datacolor Spyder for calibration.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: Proofing papers

I believe the correct name is: SanGabriel Baryta SG 2.0.

I agree with Paul’s comments about the three papers noted.

Is that San Gabriel paper? That's all I can find.

Canson Baryta (along with Museo Silver Rag) used to be my standard baryta papers. Now the new Red River Baryta v. 2 is taking over that category for me. It is very similar to the Canson product and can even use the same profiles, and it costs less.

Thanks - I must have gone to an old page with the old name, but found the right page later.

I was about to buy it, but it worked out that Canson was cheaper to NZ once shipping was included.

It's a shame, because Red River are very good to deal with in my experience.

Thanks again,
Richard

Yes, it's Red River SanGabriel Baryta SG 2.0. The SG is for semi-gloss. (I have no idea why SanGabriel is run together.)
