I became so fed up with Epson clogs both on 7800 and small desktop   
printers, that I bought a Canon Pixma Pro 100 because the rebate was so  good. 
However, it is dye, not pigment. What is the opinion about using this for  
serious prints?

So long as you’re printing on Canon’s media that’s made for that printer the results rate fairly well for longevity. Not as good as pigments of course, but not bad either. I think they’re at least as durable if not better than Fuji Crystal Archive prints. The key is to use media with a swelable coating when using dye based inks. The inks for the 100 are actually a hybrid type and not straight dyes.

Arlene, for what it’s worth, Melanie and I have found the Pixma 100 to be an excellent B+W printer. But we found that it was not so easy to set up — to get the best out of the printer and avoid hideous color shifts, you need to print through Canon’s proprietary interface. I gave up on the books and called Canon’s phone support line and the tech on the other end was amazingly good at getting us up and running.

For B+W we use Canson/Infinity Platine Fibre Rag 310g Ultra Smooth Glossy, and Ilford Gold Fibre Silk. Both papers have profiles for the Pixma 100 — dial them in and they give great results.
