Profiling trouble: dmax reached at 85%

Although I usually have no problem making profiles for papers like HPR and EEM, I'm having a hard time with Epson "High Quality Inkjet Paper" (formerly photo paper). The measured ink limit on my printer is around 25%. I'm using one of Paul's K4 recipes on a 7600, using the printer with QTR on a Mac. After making a non-linearized profile in the usual way and printing a greyscale, density peaks at around 85%, then falls of slightly towards 100% on the 21-step greyscale: %/density: 100/1.58 95/1.58 90/1.59 85/1.60 80/1.45 Starting from grey shadow=6, I've tried various values between 4 and 12: still hit dmax at 85%. Same with increasing gamma slightly, and drastically (1.2, 1.6, 2.4). I've tried lowering black boost from 60 to 20. That reduced dmax to 1.43, which was still reached at 85%. Lowering ink limit to 15 also reduced dmax but dmax still reached at 85%. Of course it's impossible to linearize with these numbers, one gets the dreaded "values not uniformly increasing" error. Any advice?
