UT14 Curves not working

UT14 Curves not working

2012-10-30 by mlewsmith

Hi All,

Another newbie here. And many thanks to the great folks that have shared their expertise.

I am running UT14 inks through my Epson 1400 printer on Epson Enhanced Matte paper. I am having problems getting any of the ICC profiles to work. I downloaded curves posted here (from dpgoldenberg33) and installed. The results are the same for a print with the "QTR_1400_UT14_EEM_cool" and the "QTR_1400_UT14_EEM_warm" print space. Not sure what is going on. On a perhaps related issue, in PS when I select one of the above print spaces, it keeps kicking it back to "Working Gray- Gray Gamma 2.2". (I have to select it in the final printing dialogue box- anywhere else and it reverts to working gray)

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Are you using QTR to print with? You either need to use the QTR print driver or convert the QTR curves into ICC profiles and then apply those to your images. I've not actually ever done the latter, so I don't know what the pitfalls are.

What OS and Photoshop versions are you using?

Hi David,

So I got it to work printing through QTR. The profiles worked well. Thanks!

I am (normally) using Windows 7 with an older version of photoshop (PS 6). Does anyone else know why these curves won't work through photoshop?

Michael,
My understanding is that the QTR print driver does not work at all through Photoshop on Windows, which is why there is the QTR print program. On the Mac, Photoshop (and other programs) can print through the QTR driver. Roy has recently released a Mac program that makes it possible to print without Photoshop.

Good luck,
David

Ok. I wasn't trying to run QTR through photoshop, but installed the ICCs and accessed them through PS. I think that I messed up something along the way, so they didn't work. I am happy with the output through QTR, though.

By the way, did I read somewhere that you did not include any of the gloss optimizer (Y cart) in your curves? If so, why not? Being a newbie, I am not familiar with the pros and cons of using glop.

Re: UT14 Curves not working

2012-11-03 by David

Michael,
The purpose of glop is to minimize the difference in reflections between regions with different amounts of ink laid down, referred to as gloss differential. The basic idea is to use more glop where there is less ink.

The reason that I haven't used it is simply that I haven't seen much gloss differential with the UT-14 inks and the glossy papers I have used. There is some, but it's only visible when the glare from the print wipes everything out. There is also a bit of a problem with setting things up so that the glop is printed for the highest white level.

So, I've just not found it worth fooling with. I've thought about using the Y position to add another ink to the set, but haven't come up with an obvious candidate for my purposes.
