Testing Printer-Ink-Paper D-max

2012-09-14 by pdesmidt tds.net

I have the refillable cartridges for my 7600, some of the Arches WC
paper, and some fresh Eboni on the way. Is using the QuadToneRip Ink
Pattern Page printed using calibration mode a good way to check system
dmax? Is there a better choice?

Peter,

Using the QTR Calibration Mode print is probably as good as it gets for
comparing dmax values. I'd set it to the highest resolution (2880,
uni-directional). On Arches the dmax will be reached close to 100. On my
7800 I actually get a bit higher if I also have MIS PK in the 100% patch.
But, the QTR calibration mode by itself gives a good standard way to
compare.

Making sure the Eboni MK line is free of any other ink and fresh also
matters, of course.

Additionally, the particular batch of Arches can make a difference. There
is no easy way to eliminate the variable. However, if you also do a dmax
test on Epson Hot Press Natural or BW, that gives a readily available, good
paper that is produced to tighter tolerances than the Arches.
