With a 3880 I can just switch cartridges as Gary suggests, but with the 4880 the process involves removing the cartridges on the left hand side of the printer, inserting "conversion cartridges", draining the ink, and then replacing the conversion cartridges with ink cartridges (including the new version of black). Since I did not open the "conversion kit", I don't know what the conversion cartridges are like. They may be small, empty cartridges, so that the draining process does not draw new fluid into the reservoirs. Does anyone know?
