This was within the large format circles. I think that changed within a few
years. Note I said "was".  Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Same with me, I have an R2880 that wouldn't feed paper. When they sent me
the new one, the instructions said to ship without carts, or accessories. I
also gained a new set of carts.

You might put the OEM inks in after the others didn't work. Epson probably
could not tell the difference. You can even rinse off the pads if you want. 

In an actually defective printer situation I had what they did is just ask
me what the product numbers were on the carts. I read them the product #s
off their carts. They said that as OK, ship the printer back *without the
carts in it.* I did. They shipped a second new printer with another set of
new carts. So, I ended up with 2 nice sets of Epson inks. (No, I didn't then
sell them on eBay, but I've thought about it.)
