Herman Leondard Jazz Images Large Inkjet Monochrome

2007-06-08 by john dean

I just saw a very nice show today at Jackson Fine Art here in Atlanta.
It was a very large show of all the classic great jazz musicians from
the 40's-50's by Herman Leonard. If you are a jazz fanatic like me
this IS the photogarphy of that era. The small prints were silver
black and white but the majority of the show was K3, very slightly to
the warm of neutral 30x40's on Premium Luster. People were arguing
whether they were digital prints or not. I knew what they were the
minute I saw them but they were really done well, and look excellent
under tungsten with no cross over. The people that did these did them
right, and they were drum scans obviously from the original 4x5 Speed
Graphic, flash bulb lit negs. This kind of lighting is a lost art. He
was good. I've seen so many of these before but this was a case where
the negs had the quality to hold up to the new technology and it was a
nice marrage. Really nice. That had the silver print right beside the
Epson prints and no one but us would know the difference behind glass.
I hightly recommend the show if it comes to your town. I'm not sure
who printed them but I belive it was the Bauhaus rip people because
they've done his work before.
