Paul's recommendation to poach the yellow chip should work. I had the same problem once on my C86, and that solution worked for me. It's possible the chip isn't defective, and that it simply needs to be reset with a chip resetter. So I wouldn't toss it yet. As you may already know, MIS sells an Epson chip resetter (about $20), as well as spare chips.
