Hi, I hear a lot of people are printing on matte papers. I have a new epson r2400 but haven't been able to get a good result on matte. Mainly, I have smooth gradient black to gray sky that prints nice and smooth on glossy and semi-gloss paper. But, on matte it comes out as a very abrupt gradient - a big swath of black next to a big swath of gray. Also, there is a lot less detail in the shadows on matte. Notice the tower in top-right that is clearly distinct on glossy but not matte. Here's a link to a scan of a test print clipping. I know the scan doesn't recreate the prints well, but the difference is even more obvious looking at the actual prints. http://bmxweb.com/printtest.jpg This is just a small test print but I had the same result at full size. epson r2400 on epson premium glossy (PK ink) and epson enhanced matte (MK ink) Best Photo, Advanced BW default settings using epson's printer/paper specific profiles letting photoshop determine colors with rel.colorimetric & blk.pt.comp. I understand that black is less dense/dark on matte paper and I don't mind that. I tried shifting ink color density and max optical density. But, I'm just wondering if it's normal/accepted that smooth gradients look better on glossy paper than on matte. Or, is there a way to get a smooth gradient transition on matte paper? Should I keep experimenting with settings or do I just need better matte paper, or different inks? thanks, - Den.
