I am not qualified to debate the merits of scaling in XYZ vs some other form of scaling. All I can say is that the ICC requires white point scaling in XYZ for media relativity and Adobe does their black point compensation by scaling in XYZ. In some respects one might say "don't fight it Marsha - it's bigger than both of us!".
