Matte Black, BO And Varnish

2005-07-02 by Ukko Heikkinen

"Epson's "Matte Black" ink is about the equivalent to Inkjetmall's PiezoTone's "Museum Black" in their limited 1000 hour Xenon testing, and it's longevity properties are a little better than PiezoTone's "Portfolio Black" ink. However in our sunlight testing Epson's Matte black ink does even better, taken out to a 30% fade.// Now if it's then protectively coated, that Epson black ink only print is indeed still quite amazingly very long term stable. I'll admit that you are kind of limited to a plain slightly neutral tone, but never the less it's a pleasing sort of looking black and white print. That's when you are only using Epson's Matte Black ink printed onto decent watercolour paper. And perhaps it might just be a little less subtle in tone and some of the very finest detail and no doubt transitions than PiezoTone prints most certainly are. But then there have been no very costly black and white set up costs, and as mentioned it's quite an acceptable shade of very slighlty warmish neutral black, it's neither cool nor too warm looking to my colour aware eyes."

                                                                                     - Livick

Varnish makes Matte Black BO prints more subtle in tone and deepens the blaks.
