Hello, I have had exactly the same problem on a 2200 that I "think" is now sorted, certainly the image as you describe is exactly what I experienced.
I "uninstalled" and loaded via the "Windows XP" link on Roy's web-site and not from the download page. I also did not load the QTRgui, which might be the problem. The issue with 16bit or 8bit is I think an irrelevance. Try this and it may work, it did for me and now all I need to do is sort out a few profiles.

I know you say youre using 8bit, but I have this repeatedly with any 
16bit image, they come out completely grainy and stretched lengthways 
by a huge amount.  Just an idea but are you sure the images were 
8bit....?
