Chris,

> Do these issues apply to both Mac and PC?

I've never had the misfortune to own a Mac, so I can't answer this one. ;)
In fact, I've never met anyone who does own a Mac, but I don't live in the
USA which seems to be 'AppleLand'.

This depends a lot on the particular external drive, and how the motherboard
handles it. I'm not sure you can generalise about it. I use a program called
Sandra that analyses write/read speeds to drives (among a multitude of other
things), but you had better find a similar program for Macs and simply do a
test of the speed of your external drive against the speed of your internal
drives. Internal drives are usually faster, but not always it seems.

P4 processors are given various letters and codenames. The latest is P4E -
Prescott. The previous versions are P4C - Northwood. Don't ask me what
happened to P4D's. Prescott's are theoretically faster, but run much hotter,
and some motherboards can't handle them.

We'd probably better drop this thread as it is OT and sure to annoy a lot of
Mac users.
