Daniel,

Operator error :-)  You should be holding the paper firm against the  ruler 
and pushing the blade bottom to top - towards ruler.  The clear plastic 
guide is NOT where the cutting blade aligns.  You align cut with the 
straight blade.  Can't think of anything else you may be doing.
