Ed, I started out using the same curves on a 1280 (Mac), VM inks, CIS and bumped into the same things you're describing. I switched to Tyler Boley's curves (available somewhere here in the files section, I believe. All of my curve issues disappeared and I'm very happy with the VM ink and HM photo rag combination.
