The plastic (tygon?) tubes are not impermeable to water. They allow water (the major component of ink) to evaporate. This process is accelerated in hot and low humidity conditions. The humidity in my printer room is almost always above 50% (yeah, I live in Seattle) and I have not had a clog in almost 2 years.
