When you Google David Spivak and Focus magazine you find many negative
posts about him - some worse than others. I too was offered a spread in the
magazine because my work was accepted for publication. It would cost only
$1500. Of course, I said no thanks. It looked like a ploy to lure
narcissistic dilettantes and desperate artists. After months of prolonged nasty
phone calls, finding the number not available, and emails, my portfolio of
prints was finally returned. In the end, I was out $35 for applying and
sending the portfolio, and $25 for return postage. That was 7 years ago
and I'd forgotten about it until the pleading phone call from him a few days
ago. He wants to get the negative posts off the Internet, but it seems
that what goes on the Internet stays on the Internet. It's sad, because
it is a beautiful magazine. Some subscribers have complained about not
receiving the magazines they paid for.
