One thing an old pharmacist (they used to be chemists, right?) once told me is to rinse whatever container you are going to use 3 times with the solution you will put in it. I rinse jugs with dilute Clorox first, then let any fumes boil off three days before using the container. That's before the "3 rinse." Another thing. I do some nickel plating, so non-distilled water would create a sludge right away. One warning I received was not to store the distilled water more than 6 months. The plastic jugs are permeable to O2. Heck, at .93/gal, buy some new.
