One factor that a chemist once mentioned to me was the varying quality of distilled water. This chemist worked in molecular biology and had standards that I assumed were way beyond what I would need.  At any rate, she recommended de-ionized or double distilled water.

I just double checked my old mostly empty bottles of generic base, some going back 4 years, and I don't see anything that looks like biological activity.  The only spots on them are splashed ink on the outside of the bottles.

As a precaution, of course, I would recommend people with funnel fill carts use black plastic or the like around them to cut the light.

If the use of the base is for Eboni dilution, then those concerned ought to buy the pre-mixed Eboni-6.
