Thanks- I'll look into the possibility of ink starvation- I hadn't thought of that. A more general question- When I change CISes, how should I store the cartridges in the one that I'm not using? I read an article about the ink drying up and blocking the flow. Is that a concern? In my 7800 (where I found a stupid issue I'd ignored -- my new computer fan was blowing hot air right into the printer) Eboni does clog if the printer is not used for a month. The dilute Eboni inks never clog even in the 7800 -- no binder and lots of glycerol. > > So, Eboni is a "canary in the coal mine" (so to speak) in an Eboni-6 system. It could be that it's not just that position, but some general 1400 problem like failure of the capping station to seal or a messed up wiper blade that is the root cause. The dilute Eboni's might just never show the problem. > > I have a similar issue with 2 C88+ printers with my daughters at colleges. Both have CISs attached. One with EZ (13.5% dilute Eboni) has run 3 years with never an issue. The other daughter has Eboni plus dilute MIS PK. (The idea was to see if the finer, non-settling carbon would be even more reliable. It's not.) The one with the dilute PK shows symptoms like yours. It might print a page or two, but then it has problems. It seems like ink starvation more than clogging, but I can't tell at a distance. I'm wondering if some of these CIS units are not pulling the ink through the system the way they should. On the other hand, this would affect all the positions equally. Then again, if there were slight gaps in the dilute Eboni pinting, you might not see them that much in an actual print. > > With the 1800 the constant "clogging" I had tuned out to be bad carts and air getting into the cart outlets. I think it was poor sealing around the inlets, but it was not worth dealing with that batch of carts or that printer, which always showed way more microbanding than the 1400. > > One C86 I once owned had paper transport problems, and I decided at that price point just throwing it away was the best solution. I don't think Epson spends a lot of money or time worrying about defects at this price point. With a 1400, I'd be less inclined to pursue this approach. Likewise my 1800 has been spared the recycling pile, but that's probably where it's headed. > > It would be interesting to know if Eboni-6 in cartridges showed the same symptoms. I, personally, got fed up with CIS issues, but then I change inkset configurations too often to make them practical anyway. > > Paul > www.PaulRoark.com >
