Inkjetmall.com has an excellent video showing how to clean desktop printers, including cleaning the wiper blade that scrapes the bottom of the print head during cleaning cycles.  

It also shows how to use a paper towel moistened with PiezoFlush solution to clean the bottom of the head.  Regurlary cleaning the capping station is very important too (also shown in the video). They use Epson 1400 in the video, but it applies to other desktop printers as well.
