The one suggestion I would make to your approach: carry your experiments to the end, i.e. make prints. You can't really make judgments about wether some approach is doing what you want unless you see those results in the final form. I assume there will be some sharpening done prior to printing. That is very important. Anyway, the next stage of the work needs to be included before you make your final decisions... my dos centavos...
